A new industry-backed white paper is calling on the Government to introduce variable Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) fees to drive sustainability in the industry. What you need to know 👇 • The UK fashion industry contributes £62 billion to the economy but also produces 336k TONNES of clothing waste each year. • The white paper proposes variable EPR fees to shift the burden of textile waste management from communities and the environment to producers. • Circular fee models could encourage sustainable design, repair, and reuse, while generating funding for circular activities. The next phase will be led by WEFT, a new independent company focused on driving this change. What do you think? We challenged ourselves to imagine that our whole wardrobe had been lost in a house fire. Our old clothes, now a pile of smouldering ashes, had been quite a careful mix of vintage, second hand, long-life classics and our fair share of fashionable mistakes. Luckily, we had insurance. So now we need new clothes. What could we buy now, to make a whole new circular wardrobe? Using a six-point assessment criteria, WCTD  made a longlist of 30 circular textile clothing products available on the shop floor today. We then tasked 30 international experts - including Adriana Galijasevic (Founder & CEO Cocircular Lab, Amsterdam); Hannah Carter, (ReSkinned, London); Dr Hanna de la Motte (Tree to Textile, RISE, Sweden); Hannah Lane (Redress, Hong Kong); Helene Smits (Stating the Obvious, Amsterdam); Dr Serena Bonomi (Circular Economy Innovation Consultant, Berlin); Tamara Cincik (Fashion Roundtable & Bath Spa Uni); and Lewis Perkins (Apparel Impact Institute, San Francisco) - to create a final shortlist of the Top 10, which will be revealed at our annual event on October 8. I am excited to share that I have co-authored my first peer-reviewed paper, developed during my master thesis in collaboration with Dr. Federico Florit, Prof. Renato Rota, and Prof. Giuseppe Storti. Our research introduces an innovative multiobjective optimization-based method for designing a Dual-reflux Pressure Swing Adsorption (DR-PSA) process, aimed at enhancing CO2 capture from post-combustion flue gases. Today’s approval of the ecodesign rules by the European Parliament plenary is a big deal 💪 The final text requires online marketplaces to comply with the #ESPR, introduces a Digital Product Passport (DPP), enhances transparency, empowers consumers' sustainable choices and facilitates product repairs and recycling♻️ EuRIC strongly welcomes these provisions, which pave the way for making products in the EU more environmentally friendly, circular and energy efficient throughout their lifecycle! But..   ❌ While we applaud the measures to increase transparency, and welcome the ban on the destruction of unsold products, we deplore that the ban fails to consider the role of recycling! ✅ Recycling should not be considered destruction; it’s a resource recovery process, crucial for extending the lifecycle of materials.
