Every year, European philanthropic organisations provide €54.5 billion in support of projects which can advance and benefit our societies. Green Building Councils (GBCs) participating in the WorldGBC #BuildingLife project have been working with the programme partners Laudes Foundation, IKEA Foundation and the European Climate Foundation to convene a wide range of the private and civil society sectors across 12 European countries. Working with these industry and government stakeholders, they have developed national roadmaps which are aimed at delivering a carbon neutral Europe by 2050 by eliminating both the operational and embodied carbon (Whole Life Carbon) impact of buildings. WorldGBC’s leading role in the Buildings Breakthrough Priority Action 1 was announced last month by Simon Sharpe, Director of Economics, United Nations Climate Champions Team, High-Level Climate Champions. Speaking at our Global Solutions Forum as part of London Climate Action Week, Simon highlighted how the Buildings Breakthrough will help international flows of finance to find their way to the most zero emission and resilient buildings across the world. With our global network of Green Building Councils, WorldGBC will work alongside Global Alliance for Buildings and Construction (GlobalABC) (hosted by UN Environment Programme) to convene an international working group ‘consisting of national Green Building Councils, key international organisations and countries to develop and build consensus in defining the common principles required for delivery of ‘near zero emission and resilient buildings’. 🌍 By 2050 Africa will be home to 1.1 billion more people than it is today. That’s nearly 75% of the world’s projected population growth of 1.5 billion more people. This means a huge demand for buildings, with 80% of those that will exist in 2050 yet to be built. We must act now. Our network of African Green Building Councils (GBCs) developed the Africa Manifesto for Sustainable Cities and the Built Environment. The Manifesto champions the needs of rapidly growing cities on the continent. Read more about the Africa Manifesto here: https://lnkd.in/eUYUDeJu During the course of this week in Lagos, Nigeria, our Africa GBCs and other #builtenvironment stakeholders are convening for the 2024 Future Cities — Africa Green Building Summit. This event will engage stakeholders across the African continent. We’re #BuildingTheTransition. Are you ready? #AGBSummit2024 #FutureCitiesAfrica #SustainableConstruction #FutureCitiesSummit2024

We will not achieve a zero carbon built environment without the building and construction sector. Governments, business and finance, but most importantly the people behind them, must act now and collaborate to rise to the 2030 climate challenge. Akshat Rathi, Senior Reporter for Climate at Bloomberg News, reiterates that even though this seems unnatural for competitors, we have no choice or the problems we are seeing now will get worse. It will take all of us working together to be a positive force for change.
