Founder & CEO at Fusion Energy Insights

We’re taking another intern this summer. Come and work with us in sharing the news about #fusionenergy! It’s not just for scientists—last year we had a politics student interning with us. As an upcoming clean energy source our work goes beyond the science. This internship is under the UK Atomic Energy Authority #FusionIndustryProgramme and you’d be working with others from Woodruff Scientific LTD, nTtau Digital LTD, SciVista, Inc and more. Apply asap. And please repost/share with any students who might be interested.

Would you like to be a summer intern with Fusion Energy Insights? From mid-June to mid-August, you would be working on fusion outreach materials, such as videos and blogs, targeted at businesspeople and investors. The content created will be used to introduce people to fusion, or to answer key questions that businesspeople or investors may have. Deadline: 15th March Apply here: https://lnkd.in/eZ-7EutX Read about our previous interns, and read some of their work, on our blog - https://lnkd.in/eBt7xNHs #FusionEnergy #internshipopportunity #internship2024

  • Last week we were thrilled to attend Harvard Business School’s ‘Workshop on Commercialisation Pathways for Fusion Energy’, where our CEO, Simon Woodruff, sat on a panel ‘Commercialisation and Pathways to the Grid 2 - Building a Company’. It was so encouraging to see so many talented minds focus on a question we think about every day: how can we make fusion energy commercially competitive? Thanks to all the organisers for such a great event! Feels like we’re one step closer on a journey whose impact can’t be understated.

Last week, the team at Woodruff Scientific had a fantastic time engaging with the fusion community at FusionXInvest in Boston. Many investors were present and it was amazing to see the event's remarkable growth since last year. There are still many challenges that face fusion but the energy and enthusiasm were tangible, and we're excited about the promising developments that will follow as a result of these engaging discussions.

For those following our ARPA-E work on the development of a standard cost model for fusion, based on the GENIV Economics Modeling Working Group model of 2007 (which is based on the refactoring of the cost accounts by the IAEA in 2001)... we had a major breakthrough this week in the development of the cost code. We now have the cost account and cost basis descriptions in an Overleaf Latex document with place-holder variables that are replaced when a Google Collaboratory python script is run to calculate power balance terms and all of the costs. The overwritten variables are then saved to Github where the completed document can be looked at again with Overleaf. This opens up the cost analysis to collaborative teams, and provides transparency, ease of use, and version control that we have so far been missing. We are a huge step forward therefore towards release of the code under a BSD license for others to use as open source software. In the next couple of weeks we will be completing the benchmark cases, and revisiting some previous reports that we have generated for others under NDA. After that, three use cases (1 for IFE, 1 for MFE and 1 for MIF) will be released openly. What a journey. Our plan then is to continue the development of the code under the Clean Air Task Force to integrate safety and hazards analysis by cost category - working with the International Fusion Safety Working Group. We will be standing up an International Fusion Economics Working Group - more information on this to follow. We also plan to hold a Research Needs Workshop on Fusion Economics in 2024, and gather community consensus on the approach towards economic modeling, which will allow us to develop a Costing Standard (community reviewed) for further development and use, and engage others in it. We are building a web interface to the costing tool with a simple user interface under nTtau Digital LTD as a pre-cursor to our implementation in Nvidia's Omniverse under a grant from the UKAEA to the University of Manchester for the development of a fusion power plant design tool, producing digital assets for each cost category (which can be rendered photorealistically), and launching automated simulation workflows, training neural networks and facilitating rapid design iterations (50ms rather that weeks or months) of any fusion system. Much to come, but finally all going in the right direction. Thanks to ARPA-E program management for patience on deliverables... almost there!

I'm proud to have represented Woodruff Scientific LTD at the recent International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Technical Meeting on Fusion Design Safety and Regulation in Vienna. It was a valuable experience engaging with experts in the field of fusion energy. I'd like to thank Simon Woodruff for this opportunity and Woodruff Scientific's commitment to advancing fusion research. The insights gained from the discussions on safety and regulation will certainly contribute to our ongoing work in this important field. I'm looking forward to continuing our efforts towards a sustainable energy future.
