Improving gender balance, equality, diversity and inclusion in the UK rail industry.

About us

Women in Rail (WR), a charity founded in 2012, comprises men and women from the UK railway sector, working together alongside major stakeholders in the industry to support the development, promotion and attraction of women in the UK railway sector and, more broadly, improve gender balance, equality, diversity and inclusion in rail. WR holds regular networking events and development workshops across the UK through its 8 regional groups and runs a very successful cross-industry mentoring programme where both female and male mentees receive guidance from more senior industry professionals to support them in their professional development, personal growth and confidence. WR currently has 5,000 members representatives of all grades and roles and a wide range of companies within the UK rail industry. WR’s head office is in London with regional groups across the UK including Scotland, North West, Yorkshire, Wales, West Midlands, East Midlands, London and the South West. Membership of Women in Rail is free. To find out more about the Charity and to sign up to become a member, visit: http://womeninrail.org/

For Black History Month, Women in Rail celebrates the theme Reclaiming Narratives. We asked Women in Rail Trustee, Sharon Salmon MBE, representing this month to express her thoughts and experiences. "Celebrating Black History Month is more than an acknowledgment of the past—it’s an opportunity for learning, reflection, and growth. This month gives us the chance to listen to the experiences of Black people in the industry, recognising the struggles they have faced and the barriers they have overcome. By hearing these stories, we take meaningful steps toward better understanding one another and fostering a more progressive industry. This celebration brings us closer to finding solutions and creating an environment where all voices are heard, valued, and empowered. It offers a moment to reflect on the collective journey we are on—working toward a future where diversity and inclusion are not just ideals but realities in the workplace. I kicked off the month with reading David Olusola's Black History for every day of the Year, which I am enjoying; and I managed to attend some events, looking forward to the weeks ahead!" #ReclaimingNarratives #feedthefaithfightthefear #inclusion #Diversity #safespace

If you don’t ask, you don’t get’ insight from Women in Rail Corporate Member Alstom In Invisible Women: Exposing Data Bias in a World Designed for Men, we learn the importance of questioning long-standing norms. At Alstom, staff have Bupa coverage, but until this year, women had to pay extra for menopause care. When someone simply asked, “why is this an additional cost?” there was no real justification. As a result, menopause coverage is now included at no extra charge for all staff.   Thanks to a suggestion from a male ally, the company’s Voices of Women employee network also worked with the Benefits team, and now the cost of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) through a NHS Prescription Prepayment Certificate (PPC) can be reclaimed via expenses.   These are just a couple of the meaningful steps Alstom are taking toward creating a more inclusive, empathetic and supportive workplace for everyone.
