About us
WMG is an academic department at the University of Warwick. Our research and education bridge the gap between academia and the public and private sectors, driving innovation across science, technology and engineering. WMG was founded by the late Professor Lord Kumar Bhattacharyya in 1980 to help reinvigorate UK manufacturing and help businesses overcome barriers to innovation. WMG’s pioneering research and education programmes, in partnership with UK and global business, has helped to transform firms in sectors such as automotive, advanced manufacturing and digital technologies. Our track record makes us the first choice for global businesses looking to invest in new techniques, products and skills that have a real impact on economic growth, society, and the environment. WMG’s education programmes begin with schools, following through to undergraduate and postgraduate level. Our focus is on creating lifelong learning opportunities for global talent in partnership with industry. We provide a range of courses and education programmes, from the WMG Academies for Young Engineers, degree apprenticeships, undergraduate and postgraduate Master’s courses, through to professional programmes and research degrees. WMG’s postgraduate programmes have international reach, with many being offered with global partners, allowing us to share our knowledge with working professionals as well as full-time students in a local industrial and economic context.

The Women in Engineering & Technology (The Ripple Effect) Conference, curated by Yewande Akinola MBE FIET HonFREng, took place at Warwick Conferences last weekend to offer valuable insights and knowledge from industry experts and inspiring women in Engineering, Technology, Innovation and Business. At the event we heard key insights from Dr Mel Loveridge, Associate Professor at WMG and Jacqui Murray, South Wales Regional Director (HVMC) at WMG who took part in a panel discussion with Innovate UK on Saturday. There was also a keynote address from Dr A-Marie I., co-founder of Stemettes, a social enterprise which encourages women and non-binary people to pursue careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths. It was an honour to take part in the Manufacturing Assembly Network's Design and Make Challenge and to help support young people on their STEM journey. Dr Mark Swift, our Director of SME Engagement said: “Design & Make connects young people with dynamic manufacturers whilst they are still at school and making future career decisions – this is critical for addressing the UK's engineering skills gap and fostering a culture of innovation. “Early exposure and practical experience help to inspire the next generation of engineers, equipping them with the necessary skills to ultimately develop new technology and grow our world leading manufacturing sector." We recently hosted a week-long work experience programme organised by our WMG Outreach team and the University's Widening Participation Team to help inspire local students to pursue a career in engineering. The programme was in collaboration with the University’s Creative Arts department who organised an arts-focused work experience programme to run at the same time. WMG’s Widening Participation Co-ordinator, Dr Phil Jemmett, said: “They have all grown in their abilities and confidence, and I hope that they take that confidence back with them to their studies, and future careers.” Read more here: https://lnkd.in/eA_KZUiY #WMGOutreach #STEMEducation #STEMCareers

We are delighted to hear of the appointment of Greg Clark as the first Executive Chair of Warwick Innovation District. We're all really excited to continue to work with him in his new role.
Former Cabinet Minister, Greg Clark, has been appointed as the first Executive Chair of Warwick Innovation District. Greg was a senior minister for nearly ten years, including serving as Business Secretary, Levelling Up Secretary, Minister for Science and Universities, and Financial Secretary to the Treasury. During the last Parliament, he was elected by the whole House of Commons to Chair the Science, Innovation and Technology Select Committee. In office, Greg was responsible for the development of the UK Industrial Strategy and for the City and Devolution Deals which have established Mayoral Combined Authorities covering half of the population of England - including the West Midlands. Our Vice-Chancellor, Professor Stuart Croft, said: “Greg’s extensive expertise in forming national industrial strategy is a huge asset. Having chaired the Advisory Board of Warwick Manufacturing Group, he knows full well the opportunities for us to deliver transformative and positive change regionally, nationally and internationally." Commenting on his appointment, Greg Clark said: “This is one of the most exciting times in history for science, technology and innovation. We have an extraordinary national opportunity to accelerate innovation and discovery and so to drive growth and prosperity across the whole country." He will take up the post in October and will be the driving force behind the establishment of the new organisation. Find out more about Greg's new role ⬇️ https://lnkd.in/ejfucMt7
