Yesterday, His Majesty delivered a historic address to the nation, outlining critical policies and initiatives set to shape the future economic and social landscape. The following are the key takeaways relevant to businesses: 1. Economic Growth & Stability: - Fiscal Policy: The government is committed to maintaining a balanced budget while ensuring strategic investments in infrastructure and innovation. Tax incentives for businesses, particularly in research and development (R&D), are being enhanced. - Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) Support: Expansion of loan guarantees and grants for SMEs to foster entrepreneurship and stimulate local economies. 2. Digital Transformation: - Digital Infrastructure: Significant investments in digital infrastructure are planned to ensure nationwide high-speed internet access, which is expected to bolster e-commerce and digital enterprises. - Data Privacy and Security: New regulations will be introduced to enhance data protection, with emphasis on customer data security. Businesses need to align with these regulations to avoid penalties. 3. Sustainability and Green Initiatives: - Environmental Targets: The speech reiterated the commitment to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. There will be new mandates for businesses. On behalf of the Wirral Chamber network, we have wrote to Wirral’s Members of Parliament congratulating them on their election victory and calling on them to ensure they work with our chamber as we continue to back our business community. The open letter says: Many congratulations on your election as a Member of Parliament representing our communities of Wirral. We look forward to working with you over the next five years in backing our business community. Time and time again, in the frenzy of party politics the real impact that businesses have on our economy can go overlooked. We want to ensure that this does not happen. Wirral’s business community is comprised of just under 10,000 businesses, collectively employing over 150,000 of your constituents. Most businesses in Wirral are small and medium in size, with 88.65% of Wirral businesses employing less than 9 employees and 9.53% employing less than 50 employees. That is why we are writing to you to ensure that you recognise the true power of the small and medium-sized business community in Wirral and the role business owners actively play in generating wealth across all our communities. For Wirral businesses to truly succeed, we need to see a long-term vision for our economy locally and nationally. Wirral business owners are passionate about their homes and want to make a difference in their community. But they can only do this with the right level of support from local government and national government. As a Chamber, we are proud to be part of the accredited British Chambers of Commerce Network. Since the general election was called, our network has been developing a five-point plan for business. The following five points are what we as a Chamber of Commerce are calling for the government to support: • An Industrial Strategy with green innovation at its heart. • Better skills planning, bringing businesses and training providers together. • Business rates reform to encourage growth and investment. • Improved relations with the European Union to cut the costs for business. • A Government-appointed AI champion for SMEs to spearhead the uptake of new technology. This plan showcases practical ideas on how you can help businesses successfully navigate the challenges and opportunities our economy faces. It’s a blueprint for boosting productivity and a pathway to higher growth. The immediate focus of our government must be on implementing our five-point plan for business. The next five years are key to Wirral’s business community. We have innovative, ambitious and community-spirited business leaders who genuinely want to make a difference in our communities. As a Member of Parliament, representing Wirral we ask that you work with us as we continue to back our businesses and help make a difference to our communities.
