I'm excited to share our new perspective paper published in Science. Our work addresses the critical need for broader representation in genomic research, emphasizing the importance of including diverse populations to ensure equitable health benefits globally. We show the efforts of different biobanks to increase diversity, especially the Million Veteran Program. The study of Verma et al. provides an improvement in non-European ancestry representation in genome databases. Of the 625,989 individuals in the cohort, 29% were of non-European ancestry, which is approximately double the proportional representation seen in the 2023 GWAS Catalog. However, because the Million Veteran Program is limited to a very specific population of individuals in the United States, further efforts beyond this study are needed to expand genomic representation in the data available in the future. New biobank efforts in low- and middle-income countries and indigenous populations, which are particularly underrepresented in genomic research, are essential to close this gap. The figure below compares the most recent data between two resources and shows differences in the genetic ancestries of the participants.
