'Blending in' is more comfortable than 'standing out'. So building your Linkedin presence might be something you tried once, then gave up on... if you tried at all. I get it, it can be intimidating or seem like a lot of hard work - or you might just think it's for 'other people'. But understand what Linkedin actually is: a professional social network. It's a real opportunity to future-proof your career. Maybe it's worth thinking about building your presence on here, after all. I'm Nigel, I help people future-proof their careers using social media. You don’t need massive numbers of likes and comments and shares. They're nice for the ego, but you don’t need to ‘go viral’ (in fact, that can be a stressful nightmare with no professional benefit). You do need this: To create well-targeted content that the *right* people see. Perhaps you want to be seen and recognised online by peers or you boss. Maybe you want to grow your profile to get the attention of a small group of specific potential prospects, brands of industry experts. Maybe you're growing your profile as an expert in your job role and creating a community of others at your level in your profession is the goal. The point is, you probably don't need the numbers you think you do, you just need the right people to see and connect with your content. So if you haven't done the work to find out *who* the right people are for you - and how you can connect with them - that's your next job. Here's 3 easy ways to get content in your Linkedin feed that you’re *actually* interested in, rather than all that beige, barely-camouflaged self-promo content you couldn't care less about. 1. Colleagues, co-workers, leadership or contemporaries These are your low-hanging fruit. Who at your company already posts on Linkedin? Find them and follow them - if you know them in person, request to connect. Note: You don’t have to ‘connect’ with them at this stage if you aren’t comfortable with that or if you don’t feel it’s yet appropriate to do so… you can just follow them if that's easier at this stage. Also... Don’t be scared to follow all of your senior management if they’re active on Linkedin! They won't mind - or bite. 2. Use the search box Find people who talk about things relevant to your job role or expertise. What is your role? What skills do you use? Use the Linkedin search box for the terms. Search on common hashtags or subject areas used by others in your profession. Find and follow people that post interesting stuff. 3. Find things you're actually interested in Don’t forget to find people who talk about things you’re *interested in*... things that spark passion. Content doesn’t only have to only be professional interest related, it can be adjacent interests that at first glance might not seem relevant to your job. You're a rounded human being with more than one interest. The important thing is that the content you see on your Linkedin feed is actually stuff you’re interested in. (Which for most people, it isn't without a little work curating). Lastly - a bonus point - unfollow people! If you're connected with people who post content that isn't relevant or interesting to you, it's okay to unfollow them! Stay connected but clear your feed so you are seeing the content you *want* to see, not all of the noise you don't! I'm Nigel, I help people future-proof their careers using social media. Are you trying to launch an #employeeadvocacy programme without active support from leadership? 👇

Are employee advocacy programmes where employees are ONLY allowed to reshare authorised brand content REALLY employee advocacy programmes? If employees aren't able to: - add their viewpoint / their expertise - add something of themselves - be relevant and appropriate to the community they're in - personalise the content for their audience The content they're sharing becomes corporate spam. - employees don't feel trusted or empowered - they quickly become demotivated - their audience switch off and don't engage I understand there are valid concerns and fears around running employee advocacy programmes. But there is another way... We call it HAPPY employee advocacy: employee-centric advocacy which delivers results for the business by focussing first on what’s in it for an employee. It empowers employees with - clear guardrails so they know what they can and can't share - active support from the leadership - ongoing training and mentorship to help overcome barriers and make it easy - acknowledgement of the value they bring Employee advocacy is a powerful tool which can help organisations build trusted relationships with their audience and drive high value brand conversations. But it has to be authentic and relevant. DM me and I'll share our framework. #employeeadvocacy #socialmedia #personalbranding #happyemployeeadvocacy

I help people future-proof their careers using social media.

14 years ago, I went to pitch to Saatchi & Saatchi, having not slept for over a fortnight. My daughter (1st child) was only a couple of weeks old and my partner and I had decided we could do things differently. We could BOTH juggle business and childcare obligations and BOTH have the best of both worlds. Ah, new parents and their blissful, deluded ignorance! Anyway, having not slept more than an hour or 2 a night for what seemed like 432 years, I turned up - almost delirious - to a very important pitch with Saatchi & Saatchi. ... I had our standard pitch deck with me, as long as I could present, I’d be okay. Right? Right. I arrived, smiling psychotically I’m sure, and was ushered into a massive meeting room with about 15 people around a table. As I started to plug my laptop in, the main guy said: ‘We don’t want your presentation, we’re just going hit you with a load of hard questions and see how you get on.’ These are the moments the phrase ‘kill me now’ was invented for. I wanted to vomit. I genuinely couldn’t even imagine stringing a sentence together, let alone answering their hard questions. Or so I thought. I can’t actually remember anything else from that meeting. The next thing I remember is calling my partner as I left their offices, saying ‘that was horrific, this isn’t going to work.’ As it turned out, we won the gig and worked with them on a number of projects for many brands over the next few years. What I learnt about myself in that moment was to trust my expertise and experience… I knew my stuff, I didn't need to rely on the pitch deck. You should trust your experience, too. Because it’s in there, even when you doubt it, even when you think it isn’t, or when you feel you’re not capable. It’s something we make a big deal of on the 30 Day Social Club - understanding your value and expertise and experience as a professional. If you don’t, how can you convey that effectively online? DM if you want to talk about this more. And my daughter (pictured, now 14)? Realising we couldn’t both do both, I chose to take a step back from the business to become the main, stay-at-home parent for her (and our son when he came along 18 months later). Best decision I ever made. I'm Nigel, I help people future-proof their careers using social media. Follow me, ring my bell 🔔 #30daysocialclub #employeefirst #employeeadvocacy

The danger with employee advocacy tools is they are often seen as a one-stop solution for EA. Whereas in reality they solve only some of the challenges. Their focus is often on making it more efficient for programme managers - which is important: - packaging content for employees to share,  - distributing that content  - measurement. But on their own they are not so strong on employee advocacy’s biggest challenge: Helping employees build a consistent habit. Success on social comes from consistent activity which actually grows influence - authentic content, engagement, networking. To achieve this you need more than software alone can provide: motivation, purpose, sustained training and support, ongoing feedback, accountability, networking building. In the rush for efficiency EA software often ends up treating employees like drones inviting them to push out similar content and neglects the other actions required to generate impact. Brands end up disappointed and employee advocacy is seen as at fault. EA tools are an important part of the puzzle. But they are not the only piece. Ensure you consider all the elements for success. --- I'm Andy Ring my bell 🔔 to receive my posts At Togethr we provide training and tech to help put you and your employees on the front foot in social media and employee advocacy. #employeeadvocacy #socialmedia

What’s your motivational word on Linkedin? When I started using Zwift on my indoor bike trainer it popped up with the advice: ‘Have a motivational word - this can help you through the tough parts of the training ride.’ I reflected on this and the TV show Ted Lasso came to mind. The word ‘Believe’ is key to the ‘Ted Lasso Way’ and helps push the team on in football. But he also encourages them to apply to their lives. In the show he puts a banner above his door with the word ‘Believe’ in massive letters. A great moment is Ted’s belief speech after it mysteriously gets ripped in half. “Believing that things can get better. That I can get better. That we will get better. Oh man. To believe in yourself. To believe in one another. Man, that’s fundamental to being alive. And look, if you can do that, if each of you can truly do that, can’t nobody rip that apart.” All in all ‘believe’ seemed like a pretty good motivational word - so I decided to borrow it. It actually does seem to help on my bike… and on Linkedin. When keeping going is pretty tough.
