International not-for-profit working to end the water, sanitation and hygiene crisis - for good.

About us

WaterAid is an international not-for-profit, determined to make clean water, decent toilets and good hygiene normal for everyone, everywhere within a generation. Since we started in 1981, we’ve remained resolutely focused on tackling these three essentials that transform people’s lives. Without all three, people can’t live dignified, healthy lives. With all three, they can break free from poverty, unleash their potential and change their lives for good. Children grow up healthy and strong, women and men start small businesses, whole communities start to thrive. It sounds normal and it should be. By inspiring people and sparking chain reactions we help deliver lasting change. By working closely with partners internationally and on the ground in some of the toughest places in the world, we have helped millions of people take control of their lives and build better futures. Now we are working to get safe water, decent toilets and good hygiene to everyone, everywhere by 2030. It’s about more than installing taps, toilets, boreholes and wells. To make lasting change happen on a massive scale, we pool knowledge and resources, link policy makers with people on the ground, change attitudes and behaviours, rally support from people and organisations around the world and convince governments to change laws. Together, we will change millions of lives for the better – and change normal for everyone, everywhere within a generation. We strive to be an excellent employer and invest in our people to maximise our impact. We provide a competitive benefits package and a tailored learning and development plan for all employees.

This week International Development Minister Anneliese Dodds made two exciting announcements: 1. That Britain will restore overseas development spending to 0.7% of economic output when fiscal circumstances allow. 2. That the UK will join the Brazilian President’s Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty. Whilst we applaud these moves, we know there's no world free from poverty on a liveable planet without water - as our CEO Tim Wainwright has witnessed this week in Madagascar. That's why we're calling on the UK government to lead the world on global water security, and place water, sanitation and hygiene at the very heart of the UK’s international development policy. #UKaid #InternationalDevelopment

I’ve been on the very front lines of climate change – here’s my main takeaway: It’s never been more important to focus on climate change adaptation, as well as mitigation, to ensure that communities can be resilient to unpredictable weather patterns and extreme weather events like droughts and floods. Madagascar is one of the most climate affected parts of the world, and the water crisis here is destroying livelihoods on a daily basis – either through too much water, or too little. With almost 1 in 10 people around the world lacking clean water close to home, funding and political support is absolutely vital to transform lives and ensure no one is held back by something that really is a basic human right – clean water. Meet Elior, our Social Media Manager (you may have seen him on our TikTok every now and again!)   Elior joined us a year ago and has already worked on some exciting projects, including campaigns as part of our partnerships with Glastonbury, Wimbledon and Armani.   What’s been your proudest moment at WaterAid so far?   “Probably managing the Extra Time campaign on TikTok last year. I got to work with some really great content creators and collaborate with lots of different teams internally to bring everything together. Seeing the tangible impact of the campaign (over 4 million impressions) was really motivating and taught me a lot about project management and leading a team.”    What’s one valuable insight into the work you do that you’d like to share?   “When you’re immersed in our work like I have been this last year, it’s easy to forget how much people aren’t aware of when it comes to the water crisis and climate change. Some of the statistics are staggering; almost 1 in 10 people don’t have access to water close to home! It’s difficult to visualise it, but so important to raise awareness and drive positive change.”   Keep an eye on our job openings for your chance to join our team and make a real impact 💧

It’s time for Keir Starmer to invest, lead and empower ✊ Almost 1 in 10 people don’t have clean water close to home – something which is a basic human right. The Labour Party has the opportunity to be a global water champion, making clean water central to our global climate and health action. Water is essential for tackling global inequality, which is why we’re calling on the new government to prioritise water in their international development spending. Overheard in London: "Can British summer weather just make up its mind already?" Unpredictable weather patterns and extreme weather events are a result of the ongoing climate crisis, which is impacting people all around the world — from disrupting travel plans to reducing access to water for vulnerable communities.

People with disabilities are often left out of the conversation about issues that affect them. This striking street mural — advertising the Paralympic Games in Paris this summer — shines a light on the brilliance of those with disabilities who are able to achieve incredible feats, breaking down barriers in sports and beyond. But around the world, almost 1 in 10 people don't have clean water close to home, and this is particularly challenging for people living with disabilities. In many communities, the nearest water source is miles away, making it almost impossible for people with impaired mobility to make the treacherous journey and carry water back home. It's our duty to make sure clean water is within reach for everyone, everywhere, ensuring that everyone can live a more dignified life 💙

As David Lammy begins his role as foreign secretary, we hope his leadership will bring decisive action and a commitment to universal access to clean water, decent toilets and good hygiene. Adaptation is impossible without water, and our efforts to combat the climate crisis will fall short without focusing on this essential resource. We're calling on the new government to ensure everyone, everywhere has clean water, by making it a priority in their international development budget. Clean water has an incredible ripple effect that impacts so many areas of life. As our climate changes, and water sources become threatened, it’s ordinary people who suffer the consequences – simply because they happen to live somewhere that's vulnerable to extreme or unpredictable weather.
