International not-for-profit working to end the water, sanitation and hygiene crisis - for good.

About us

WaterAid is an international not-for-profit, determined to make clean water, decent toilets and good hygiene normal for everyone, everywhere within a generation. Since we started in 1981, we’ve remained resolutely focused on tackling these three essentials that transform people’s lives. Without all three, people can’t live dignified, healthy lives. With all three, they can break free from poverty, unleash their potential and change their lives for good. Children grow up healthy and strong, women and men start small businesses, whole communities start to thrive. It sounds normal and it should be. By inspiring people and sparking chain reactions we help deliver lasting change. By working closely with partners internationally and on the ground in some of the toughest places in the world, we have helped millions of people take control of their lives and build better futures. Now we are working to get safe water, decent toilets and good hygiene to everyone, everywhere by 2030. It’s about more than installing taps, toilets, boreholes and wells. To make lasting change happen on a massive scale, we pool knowledge and resources, link policy makers with people on the ground, change attitudes and behaviours, rally support from people and organisations around the world and convince governments to change laws. Together, we will change millions of lives for the better – and change normal for everyone, everywhere within a generation. We strive to be an excellent employer and invest in our people to maximise our impact. We provide a competitive benefits package and a tailored learning and development plan for all employees.

⚠️ The global water crisis is driving food insecurity to an all-time high ⚠️ Confirmed in a new landmark report by the Global Commission on the Economics of Water, this crisis threatens millions of lives, risks destabilising global economies – and demands urgent action. Without clean water: 🌽Crops fail 🦠 Infections spread 👧🏽 Women and girls have to walk hours just to survive And climate change is only making this worse. 💦 Water must be prioritised at all levels of governance. We need government leadership, more funding to transform our global water system, and partnerships between governments, donors, the private sector and affected communities to drive action. #WaterCrisis #FoodSecurity #ClimateChange

Since it's World Statistics Day this weekend, here are some shocking stats about the water crisis... 💦 Almost 10% of people don't have clean water close to home — that's over 700 million! 🚽 Almost 20% don't have a decent toilet of their own — that's 1.5 BILLION. 🧼 Almost 25% of people don't have basic hygiene services, like soap and water to wash their hands at home. Clean water, decent toilets and good hygiene should be a normal part of life for everyone, everywhere, so it's unacceptable that this still isn't the case. That's why we're working around the world to make sure no one is held back because they don't have these basic human rights 💙 #WorldStatisticsDay #WaterAid #Water #CleanWater #Toilets #Hygiene #HumanRights

Thinking of working in the charity sector? Here are 3 reasons to consider it as your next career move: 1. We spend so much of our time working, why not use that time to drive change and make the world a better place? Finishing each day knowing you’ve contributed towards a positive goal is really motivating and it provides a deep sense of job satisfaction. 2. Not only is job satisfaction generally higher in the charity sector, but many not-for-profits offer competitive benefits packages, including flexible working and generous annual leave. At WaterAid, we invest in our team's wellbeing, offering family-friend allowances, medical cover and wellbeing support. 3. Many charities offer the chance to work in a diverse workplace, where everyone is not only accepted, but embraced. This is particularly true for international organisations like WaterAid, where you'll have the chance to work with colleagues from all around the world. We're proud to be a place where all our people feel safe and able to contribute their voice and truly live our values. Amazing to be at the first day of the #WorldHealthSummit and represent WaterAid with my colleague Alexia Knappmann as co-host of an expert roundtable on WASH in health care faciliities: Tackling the AMR crisis with a One Health approach with Malteser International. Significant agreement in the room that we need to join forces to communicate the cost-benefit of investments in WASH in health care facilities for governments, donors, communities, and health providers across a range of sectors like AMR, disease prevention, maternal health. Fantastic to hear from so many experts of their support for greater and sustained investment in WASH in health care facilities as a core priority, and also discussion on how to work with donor governments to galvanise the political support to deliver on commitments with funding. Key experts in the world of #AntiMicrobialResistence recognised evidence and data that already existed in support of WASH, and that more reward is needed for action, tracking of funding and greater accountability for inaction. Thanks go to all our speakers and facilitators Maria Neira, Ralph Achenbach Annie Sheria Msosa, Dr Jean Paul Ovoyo, Andreas schultz, Anja Leetz, Malin Grape, Muna ABU SIN, and all the contributors to the discussion.

I don't know about you, but we do most of our creative thinking in the shower. For most of us, the bathroom is a sanctuary — a place to relax, unwind and do our... business. We take them for granted, but did you know that almost 1 in 5 people around the world don't have a decent toilet of their own? The sanitation crisis is being made worse because of climate change, but we're working with communities and governments to make sure no one is held back because they don't have something as essential as a loo 💙

🚨 This is a clear sign that the climate crisis is a water crisis 🚨 According to the World Meteorological Organization, 2023 was the driest year for global rivers in over thirty years, putting immense pressure on the water supplies that countless communities depend on. This is why we won't stop calling on world leaders to prioritise action on water. After all, no one can adapt to a world without water. 📨 If you're in the UK, you can email your MP and encourage them to raise the importance of clean water in parliament 👉 https://brnw.ch/21wNBT5 #ClimateChange #ClimateNews #CleanWater
