We represent water companies to ensure that customers receive high quality water and that our environment is protected.
About us
Water UK is a membership organisation which represents all major statutory water and wastewater service providers in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Our vision is of a trusted water sector, providing customers and communities with world-class services and enhancing the UK's quality of life. Our purpose is to promote the conditions needed to achieve our vision through leadership in bringing people together, informing debate and generating ideas. Our priorities are to help water and wastewater companies work with others to: - Increase levels of customer and stakeholder trust in the sector - Address short and long term pressures on UK water and wastewater networks posed by growing demand and climate change - Inform the operation and development of markets, and their regulation, in the long-term interests of customers - Make the case for smart design and enforcement of legislation/regulation governing water quality and wastewater in delivering public health and environmental improvements On behalf of our members, we engage with Defra, other government departments, regulatory bodies (such as Ofwat, the Environment Agency, the Drinking Water Inspectorate) and consumer bodies - and their equivalents in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. We also work with a wide range of partners, industry bodies, NGOs and stakeholders in support of our vision of a trusted water sector.

We always welcome debate and fresh thinking and though we don’t agree with everything in this blog from River Action UK there is much here that Water UK, water companies, NGOs, and others do agree on. There is no such thing as cheap water and water companies are ready to make a record £100bn investment, which will massively improve infrastructure and reduce discharges. We also welcome empowered regulators and innovative approaches to the challenges of climate change and increasing population.
Take a look at the brilliant blog by Martin Salter, The Angling Trust's Head of Policy, which outlines the 12 measures that will make a difference if we elect a government with the guts to do what’s necessary to tackle the #SewageScandal 💩 👇 https://lnkd.in/eAW73isy

The UK Government’s announcement on banning wet wipes containing plastic is a welcome first step in eliminating plastic from our waterways and reducing blockages in sewers. In the UK 2.5 million wet wipes are flushed down the toilet every year. As well as causing significant sewer blockages, these wipes break down into harmful microplastics which can have damaging effects on biodiversity and the health of our rivers and seas. In our latest blog we explain how the Government should go further and faster to accelerate progress. Find out more below.
Wet wipe ban a step in the right direction.

English water companies have published a world-leading plan to remove 4 million spills from our rivers and coasts. 150,000 sewage spills are to be cut each year across England by 2030, more than double what the Government asked for. Water companies have put forward a £10.2 billion proposal to fund improvements to 2030, tripling current investment and making this the most expansive overflows programme in the world. Nearly 9,000 planned improvements would end all ecological harm and prioritise action where most needed. In just the first five years, nearly two thirds of spills would be removed near bathing areas, and nearly half of spills near conservation areas. We're calling on Ofwat to approve these proposals and the Government to deliver the policy commitments it has made to accelerate progress.
