About us
War Child was founded in 1993 in response to the war in the Balkans. Our belief remains the same today as it was then—no child should have their life destroyed by war. Children do not start wars but their families, homes, and schools—the very things they rely on for support and safety—continue to be destroyed by conflict. Children are not only at risk of being killed or injured but as communities flee and disperse, children often find themselves alone, traumatised, unable to continue their education and with no one to turn to. At War Child we understand these effects of conflict, which is why we focus our energies on helping and preventing the most vulnerable children from having their lives torn apart by the cycle of conflict, giving them a lifeline and a sense of hope for the future.

A mental health crisis is flaring in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. AP News recently visited our team in Goma and spoke with Isaac, our emergency response coordinator about this escalating crisis. War Child is using movement, song and play to help children and young people express themselves and escape the violence - even for a moment. We also offer tools to parents on how to lower stress and emotionally support their children. Read the full piece here: https://lnkd.in/eGY8Zn-a

"Children are always the ones that pay the highest price." - Flutra Gorana, War Child Regional Director for the Middle East. Flutra spoke to BBC News about the devastating impact the violence in Lebanon is having on children and their mental health, as well as the support our teams are currently providing - "This is a trauma that will last a lifetime if we don't address it immediately." She also spoke about how War Child have been preparing for this regional escalation. “We have enough supplies to last us for a couple of months. If the situation worsens; if they close the airport, then things will really go downhill.” Since this interview, Flutra's worst fears are becoming a reality. Israeli airstrikes and hostilities have only intensified, and the humanitarian situation is at a crisis point - entire communities have been uprooted, healthcare facilities have been attacked, and nearly all schools are closed. ❗ We need a permanent #CeasefireNOW as the only way to protect children.

From all of us at War Child, we'd like to say a huge thank you to everyone who took part in our #DayoftheGirl shows with YouTube Music last week. We are delighted to announce the shows raised an amazing £103,500! At a time when children living through conflict need our support more than ever, you helped spotlight the devastating impact of war on girls and women, all while raising crucial funds for our work to protect, educate, and advocate for their rights. Thank you to Bree Runway, RØRY, Matilda Mann and Connie Constance all the support acts for standing together to demand: No girl or child should be part of war. Ever. Special thanks to our headline sponsor YouTube Music, Communion ONE our generous promoter partner, and DHL Express for kindly sponsoring the event.

On Sunday, a school in Gaza where children were sheltering was struck by Israeli shelling. Again. Children must never be targets in war, and yet children are among those killed. Again. International humanitarian law has been breached. Again. This impunity must end. States must hold the Government of Israel accountable. This must stop!

More than 56,300 of you have signed our petition calling on the UK Government to protect the children of Gaza. Keir Starmer has called for a ceasefire, but the situation for children remains the same. He must demand vital aid be let into Gaza and prioritise saving innocent children’s lives. 📣 Keep making you voice heard: Join us and call on Keir Starmer to do everything he can to end the nightmare for Gaza's children now. 🔗 https://bit.ly/3U217kF

This International Day of the Girl we asked girls we work with at Nakivale Refugee Settlement in Uganda why they love being a girl. Thousands of girls and families have been arriving at Nakivale after fleeing the conflict in neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo. In times of crisis, gender inequality escalates. Those assigned female at birth are 2.5x more likely to be out of school. 1 in 5 girls and women suffer sexual violence, and often can't access healthcare. Girls and women didn’t start these wars, but they are paying the price. That's why our Day of the Girl concerts with YouTube Music are more than just performances - they are a lifeline. War Child provides vital mental health care, protection and education in 14 countries around the world. But our work continues. So join us tomorrow at the Lexington in London with Connie Constance to stand with girls and women affected by conflict. Last few tickets: https://comm.tix.to/DOTG 🎟️🔗 #DayoftheGirl

In impossible circumstances, War Child and our partners are still in Gaza and the West Bank, working day and night to provide a lifeline for children who are stuck in this nightmare. In the last 12 months, we have reached more than 167,000 people, including over 106,000 children. This includes: 17,000 children who needed help to process their trauma. They received essential mental health support. 15,000 people who didn’t have enough to eat. They received vital food packages. 1,300 local counsellors who needed psychological first aid. They received remote support, so they can continue to help others. But in Gaza alone, 1.1 million children need help. Our staff can't do it without you. 🔗Donate today: https://bit.ly/4a8UGlS
