In last week King's Speech, the new Government outlined its planned legislation for the coming year. A selection of proposed legislation will impact on businesses in the luxury sector, notably the Skills England Bill, which intends to develop an overview of national and local skills needs while funding the necessary training for learners and employers to meet these needs. In Walpole's Luxury in the Making study, published earlier this year, we celebrated the people behind some of the exceptional luxury products made in the UK every day and outlined our recommendations to policymakers to protect the UK's world-class industrial crafts and the communities they serve. These calls include: • Improved geographical indicator regime to protect skills and crafts • Reform the apprentice levy • Ensure access to talent and recognise the highly skilled nature of luxury careers Read the study below.

Last week, the British Consul General, Hannah Young, and Walpole's Charlotte Keesing hosted a dinner to represent British luxury in New York City, USA. Today, North America remains the second largest international market for British luxury – an important achievement to celebrate for both countries. Guests included Dame Glenda Bailey, Mustafa Kacar, Avril Graham, Justin Fenner, Kitty Guo and many more. During dinner, guests discussed the opportunities for British luxury, the evolving media and retail landscape, and luxury travel trends in the US. The dinner was hosted as part of a trip to develop activities for Walpole's next Trade Mission to New York in March 2025. Our thanks to Heather Falconer-Serhan, Financial Times, Chapel Down Group, Ettinger London, Neal's Yard Remedies, Biscuiteers and McQueens Flowers for helping to create such a special night.
