This year's harvest just got a lot more special! 💚 The orchards and vineyards at our farm - the Leckford Estate in Hampshire - have become the first in the UK to achieve the Regenified™ certification, a global leader in regenerative agriculture verification 👊 This means the farm has been recognised for its commitment to grow grapes and apples and pears in a way that is more friendly towards nature 🍎 🍐 🍇 As the only UK supermarket owned farm producing fresh local produce, the Leckford Estate has been farming regeneratively since 2020, and commits to embracing a farming system that produces high quality food that is kinder to the environment. We know how important animal welfare is for our customers 💚 We are No.1 for animal welfare and have won more Compassion in World Farming awards than any other supermarket. We work closely with our UK farmers to ensure all the livestock that provides the meat, poultry, eggs, dairy and fish products we sell are reared to the very highest welfare standards. Transparency is a huge priority for us as a retailer, and Waitrose recently became the first supermarket to introduce free range milk and cream across our fresh own label range. It's nearly the end of Fairtrade Fortnight, but our support for The Fairtrade Foundation continues all year round 💚 We'd like to introduce you to Chepngeno Wiliter, a tea farmer in Waitrose’ supply chain based in Kenya - perfect timing if you’ve got a #Fairtrade cuppa in hand! ☕ Chepngeno is photographed next to a water tap installation, made possible in part by the Fairtrade Premium, which supplies fresh and continuous water for up to four towns of farmers, workers and communities 🚰 "As we all know, water is life." Chepngeno commented that, before the water project, crowds would congregate at the river's tiny source from as early as 4am, as it took so long to collect water. Contamination risks would also regularly leave entire communities poorly. "...since this project was given unto us, it has minimised those cases of waterborne diseases… it has helped us; these taps can be opened and anyone coming to fetch the water can access it efficiently and it is accessible." The water project is vital for farmers like Chepngeno, as they continue to provide water even during dry spells 🌾 "Here, we have about four villages but when there is drought, people from far towns can come here because this water source does not dry up. In a day, it can serve not less than 300 people." Since 2020, all Waitrose own-label tea, coffee, bananas and sugar products, and the cocoa used in confectionery, have been 100% Fairtrade. Branch Manager Sian, who has spent her whole career with Waitrose, said: “Customer service is something we pride ourselves on and I’m super passionate about it.
