We're always excited to see how ASReml-R contributes to advancing breeding programs. Recently, Tolera Keno, an Agricultural Research Scientist specialising in plant breeding, genetics, and plant pathology, shared a research paper with us that highlights its impact: 🌽 Improving Genetic Gain in Maize Breeding 🌽 This recent study has uncovered how the use of a fixed shelling percentage (80%) in hybrid maize multi-environment yield trials biases genotype selection, slowing genetic gain. The solution? Accounting for variations in shelling percentage across genotypes and environments, which can improve selection accuracy.   This multi-trait and multi-environment study, conducted across six trials in Ethiopia, used the powerful Factor Analytic structure in ASReml-R to estimate simultaneously genotype-by-environment interactions and correlations between traits across trials. The precision of ASReml helped reveal a substantial variation in genetic response for the ratio grain/cob in maize which was also impacted by environmental influences. Great work here on the genetic gains in biofortified cassava breeding. ASReml-R was pivotal for high-precision data analysis. By fitting linear mixed-effects models, the team was able to accurately estimate genetic gains in key traits, yield, and plant architecture. The use of ASReml demonstrates the value of powerful statistical tools in navigating the complexities of breeding programs, providing insights that push the boundaries of both nutritional and agronomic advancements.
