We took part in the South Yorkshire Careers Hub Teacher Externship Programme, by welcoming Geography teachers from Brinsworth Academy to our head office in Doncaster. The day focused on the variety of roles available in rail and included a session on the behavioural skills we look for in candidates. We received great feedback, which highlighted the importance of teachers knowing what personal skills and qualities companies are looking for when hiring young people, so they can apply this knowledge to their teaching. Our track team has delivered the first major switches and crossings (S&C) renewal as part of the Southern Integrated Delivery. The work was completed over a series of weekend possessions and saw the team renew 56 panels (24 S&C panels and 32 plain line panels) with the heaviest reaching 37 tonnes, all aided by our Kirow 1200 crane and team. Our team has shared a great little timelapse of the work undertaken on Nottingham Tram this month. We're currently working across the network, replacing worn out sections of track to help improve passenger journeys. It's out with the old and in with the new, as our teams replace worn out sections of track on the Supertram Network in Sheffield. Our team is currently working at White Lane, before moving on to Ridgeway Road and Hollinsend tram stops, and Herdings – Leighton Road tram stop to undertake remedial works in early August. 2024 marks 10 years in rail for Tom Taylor, who originally joined VolkerRail on an engineering apprenticeship in 2014. After exploring the operational side of the railway with Network Rail, Tom rejoined us in 2022, and has progressed to lead test engineer, with ambitions to become a tester in charge. At VolkerRail we continue to focus on bringing new talent into the rail industry. Today, we would like to introduce Jack Nicholson, who joined last year, on a Level 4 Rail Engineering Advanced Technician (Telecoms) apprenticeship. Jack chose to become a telecoms apprentice because he wanted a new challenge, and the rail sector was recommended by friends. Earlier this year, the REAL Power Supply Upgrade completed its final landscaping work for the Power Supply Upgrade programme, planting over 1,000 native trees, shrubs, and meadow grassland within six months, which have already begun to attract more wildlife. In a concerted effort to support these natural habitats, the alliance also assembled bat and bird boxes, and created areas of brush and log piles to build hibernacula for insects and provide food for birds and other species. The alliance worked closely in consultation with Network Rail, lineside neighbours, and local authorities, ensuring the views and needs of those living and working near the sites were considered. Well done to our team ‘Volker Victorious’ who reached the semi-final stage in Bluebell Wood Children's Hospice’s annual Dragon Boat Race at the weekend.
