About us
Voice 21 is the national oracy education charity. We exist to empower every child to use their voice for success in school and life. We work to transform learning and life chances through talk by increasing access to a high-quality oracy education for those that need it most. Children’s spoken language skills are one of the strongest predictors of their future life chances. Yet too many disadvantaged children arrive at school with poor communication skills, already behind their more advantaged peers. Research shows that economically disadvantaged students can be as much as 19 months behind in language development by the age of five. Left unaddressed, this gap grows rather than diminishes as students move through school. Despite widespread recognition of the importance of oracy (e.g. for learning, attainment, confidence, wellbeing, employability, civic engagement) only a minority of schools have consistent, coherent or adequately resourced provision to give it the time and status it deserves. This is where Voice 21 makes a difference. Launched in 2015, we have since grown to work with over 1,200 schools and 10,000 schools across the UK. Voice 21 believes that oracy has been undervalued and overlooked within our schools for too long denying the majority of children and young people opportunities consistently afforded to an advantaged few. It is time for change.

Voice 21 warmly welcomes Education Secretary, Bridget Phillipson’s announcement that the recently launched Curriculum and Assessment Review will deliver on the Labour Party’s commitment to oracy We believe that ensuring every child has access to a high-quality oracy education requires a whole-school approach. Any recommendations made as part of the review must: - Ensure oracy is embedded across the curriculum, attending to the different ways language is used for learning, in each subject (i.e. disciplinary oracy) - Include a focus on both learning to and learning through talk: students must learn both technical speaking skills necessary for school and life, and also have the opportunity to access and engage with their learning through talk - Be accompanied by strong plan for implementation of oracy education in schools and rigorous professional development for teachers Read our full statement below https://lnkd.in/e5kPvbTQ

Voice 21 is delighted that Baroness Estelle Morris is joining Voice 21 as Chair of the Board of Trustees. Dr Kate Paradine, CEO of Voice 21, said: “I am delighted that Estelle is joining Voice 21 as Chair of the Board of Trustees. She brings a wealth of experience and expertise at this important time for oracy in education. I know she will play a vital role in shaping Voice 21’s next strategy and ensuring we stay at the cutting edge of new thinking and practice so that every child has access to the high-quality oracy education that enables them to thrive in school and in life” Baroness Morris of Yardley said: “I know how important good speaking and listening skills are for social mobility, navigating a complex world and building confidence. For me, oracy should be seen as of equal importance to reading, writing and maths.
