As the national tourism agency – a non-departmental public body funded by the Department for Culture, Media & Sport (DCMS), VisitEngland plays a unique role in developing English tourism through supporting business growth and informing industry with statutory research and insights and engagement activities through events and communications. We provide extensive support for the domestic tourism sector through our business support hub, publications and resources, the Pink Book of Legislation, Quality Assessment Schemes and the annual VisitEngland Awards for Excellence. We also run the annual English Tourism Week and Tourism Superstar campaigns, all of which champion the industry and everyone working within it. Music Tourism does a huge amount for our economy and for our region specifically. We're proud to have the headquarters of PPL PRS Ltd right here in Leicester, and we recently hosted Kasabian's homecoming Summer Solstice II gig here, welcoming 30,000 to the city's Victoria Park, following on from last year's Radio 2 in the Park show.
UK Music unveils new research into the value of gigs, concerts and festivals to local economies, with Beyonce and Blur attracting 19.2 million music tourists to UK events. Music tourism is a growing part of the music industry. London saw a 40% rise in music tourists from 4.9 million in 2022, to 6.9 million in 2023. This growth is not just limited to London, with an 86% increase in music tourists to the South West, rising from 1 million in 2022, to 2 million in 2023. There was also a 29% increase of music tourists in the North East, from 352,000 in 2022 to 489,000 in 2023. However, despite the growth in music tourism, independent festivals and grassroots music venues are still struggling and artists are also facing a cost-of-touring crisis. In September 2023, UK Music published its Manifesto for Music, which outlined measures that could be taken to supercharge music industry growth and support the talent pipeline and is now calling on the new Government to take action. We are delighted to announce that this month we completed a VisitEngland funded project, our first major collaboration as a Local Visitor Economy Partnership (LVEP). This funding was used to create brand new photography of #Leicester and #Leicestershire locations and attractions, which we are already using, and will continue to use to promote #leicester and #leicestershire as a great place to live, work, visit and explore. The images, which were chosen with a specific eye on #accessibility, include Belvoir Castle, the University of Leicester Botanic Gardens, Brocks Hill Country Park, Conkers Outdoors Attraction, Education, Corporate & Events Venue, Everards of Leicestershire, Foxton Locks, the Great Central Railway, the National Space Centre, King Richard III Visitor Centre, the Stockyard in Melton Mowbray Town Estate, Stoney Cove Diving Centre, Triumph Factory Visitor Experience, Twycross Zoo and our Bring The Paint #festival. We have already chosen some of the best of these to share with VisitEngland and VisitBritain, and will also be making them available to our partners in Leicestershire County Council and District marketing teams. 🎉 We are excited to share that we've just completed our first large project in collaboration with VisitEngland funded by our first grant as a Local Visitor Economy Partnership (LVEP). We were delighted to welcome Claire Ward, Mayor of the East Midlands to a Visitor Economy roundtable earlier this week, it was great to hear about her Visit East Midlands project and priorities for the region. Claire Ward, Mayor of the East Midlands launched her Visit East Midlands project at Chatsworth in Derbyshire on Monday (22 July). The event featured a roundtable discussion organised by Visit Peak District and Derbyshire, the lead partner of the Visit Peak District Derbyshire & Derby LVEP with representatives from some of Derbyshire’s most renowned tourist attractions. Also in attendance were Patricia Yates, CEO of VisitBritain, and colleagues from VisitEngland and VisitBritain. A highlight of the day was Mayor Claire’s meeting with Lord Burlington, CEO Stephen Vickers, and the team from the Devonshire Group. The group oversees various UK and Ireland charities, hospitality, and agricultural businesses, including the Chatsworth House Trust. This incredible charity is dedicated to preserving the house, garden, park, and collections at Chatsworth. Mayor Claire emphasised the importance of collaboration to make the East Midlands a premier tourist destination, highlighting the region's successes and potential for growth.
