It’s been a pleasure logging into LinkedIn today, everyone talking about Ivan Toney’s technique on penalties. Every Brentford fan has seen it all before and knew it was going in 😊 Anyway, a quick thank you message. The love I got from last week’s post has been wonderful and I’m honoured to say that I have been invited to be the opening speaker for two businesses for their inclusion events in September! For those of you asking, I’m still recruiting in the tech space, the talks are my way of using my experience to make a difference and to set an example. Additionally, I have had  a few questions about the video of me in the gym. I go to the gym to improve my mobility through Link Torbay CIC and the wonderful Tom Murch who needs to shout more about the work he does! From people telling me that they would understand my disability more if I was in a wheelchair to complete strangers refusing to believe that my daughter is mine due to their own preconceived idea of physical disability... The number of opinions that I have thrown in my direction by complete strangers would blow your mind! The examples are endless. So, I’m using my personal and professional experiences to try and make a difference, with disability awareness talks that are designed to be thought-provoking and educational, helping to facilitate conversations in the workplace. There are over 16 million people in the UK with disabilities. I now provide disability awareness talks to play my part in making a difference and removing some of the barriers into work for individuals with disabilities. I’m putting myself out of my comfort zone and sharing things about myself and my experiences in the name of raising awareness. The talks so far have been amazing.  I have genuinely enjoyed them and the amount of questions I have faced have opened up great conversations and showed that there is a real appetite for such talks. I've never been one for public speaking and never been one for talking about myself..... so providing a service that involves both of these things is an interesting decision on my part! So why did I decide to put myself out of my comfort zone? I'm keen to use my personal and professional experience to raise awareness around life and work with a physical disability in order to drive conversations and help people feel comfortable about the subject in the workplace. I undertake an advisory role at Link Torbay and I want to lead by example for some of the younger members to show them that there is a route into the workplace. I've enjoyed the talks I have done so far and have been overwhelmed by the feedback, some of which includes: - “Everything included in this awareness training was useful. The way the trainer used his own life experiences within this, I feel, caused a big impact on the session in a positive way.
