This month we’re focusing on our partnership with Pump Aid as part of our #socialimpact spotlight series https://bit.ly/3KTwMAF. Urenco is delighted to support the charity’s work training local people in Malawi as water entrepreneurs to maintain, fit and supply water pumps, creating jobs and ensuring there is a sustainable way to access clean water. Pump Aid has been developing sustainable water solutions in rural sub-Saharan Africa for over 25 years, helping provide nearly 1.5 million people with access to safe and clean water in the process. Recently, colleagues from Urenco’s European sites volunteered their engineering talent and experience to help Pump Aid resolve some of its practical challenges in ensuring the pumps are efficient and #sustainable. We’re all looking forward to seeing how these improvements can be further trialed and implemented on the ground. Another step forward for our #netzero journey 😀 🌳: The Solar Park at our German site is now fully installed! More than 14,000 solar panels have been mounted in Gronau, and once commissioned will ensure the flexible use of renewables at the site and support grid stability. It will also supply 20 charging points for employees' electric vehicles. The park could supply the equivalent of around 1,400 four-person households with electricity. #sustainability #energy

📸 Urenco’s Young Person Network (YPN) met for a lunch earlier this week - as part of a regular social programme organised by the network to help colleagues working in different parts of the business get to know each other. We've developed a range of improvements that could be made to pumps in Malawi to improve people's access to clean water. Supported by our partner Pump Aid, we came up with a number of prototypes including a household and irrigation pump, one solar-powered. Last week the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)'s Director General Rafael Grossi spoke to The World Bank on the importance of #nuclearenergy financing, calling on multilateral development banks to align themselves with the COP28 "new global consensus" and help achieve a doubling of #nuclear by 2050. "Doubling #nuclear capacity by 2050 will require a more than doubling of investments in nuclear power to $100 billion annually" is what Grossi said to his audience, urging development banks to help finance #nuclearenergy, so the world can meet climate goals by mid-century. Through this, we are able to manage and treat almost all nuclear material, either storing it or treating it, and placing it safely back into the global supply chain. Placing materials back into the supply chain, promoting a circular economy, provides significant drivers for minimizing waste, increasing efficiency and enhancing sustainability.
