🌍#Europe Update: A complete update of the Database of Nationally Designated Areas (formerly known as Common Database on Designated Areas) and Natura 2000 Network provided by the European Environment Agency, and a complete update of the Emerald Network provided by the Council of Europe. Together this update constitutes an update to over 130,000 nationally designated sites and almost 30,000 regionally designated sites across Europe. Notably, this update also included the first ever submission of OECM's for Sweden, with approximately 5,000 #OECMs reported. https://lnkd.in/ekcUfZDN

City leaders are recognising the potential of protecting, sustainably managing and restoring ecosystems and how it can help address the myriad societal challenges. 🏙 Many cities are exploring nature-based solutions (NbS) such as urban forests, green roofs and walls, hedges and meadows to help tackle the challenges of rapid urbanisation and contribute to the global climate and biodiversity goals.     However, there are gaps in tools and knowledge required for decision-makers to deploy NbS actions in urban spaces. 🍃 Our Programme Officer Julieta Lahud Vega shares key barriers in implementing NbS actions and how UNEP-WCMC with partners at NetworkNature EU are helping address some of the key challenges to integrate NbS into city planning. Understanding value chains is essential but tricky. The UNEP-WCMC convened Nature Action Dialogues🌿 brought together private sector stakeholders and biodiversity experts to consider opportunities for the private sector to support the delivery of the goals and targets of the #GBF Held earlier in July, the Dialogues observed discussions on key topics, including understanding value chains. Value chains are complex, and the private sector needs to enhance their understanding of business value chains to raise ambition and drive transformation of business models. 🚨 Can nature-based solutions (NbS) drive transformative change for the sustainable use and management of biodiversity in socioecological systems? 🌱 In a study funded by Biodiversa and authored by NbS experts from UNEP-WCMC, we explore the extent to which NbS supports transformative change. The study assesses the relationship between NbS interventions and transformative change by reviewing case studies from grey and peer-reviewed literature. Results from the review showcase that many NbS interventions have the potential to contribute towards transformative change. However, there are gaps such as incomplete evidence, lack of comprehensive evaluations across diverse scales and timeframes, which challenges in assessing certain indications which limit a comprehensive understanding. Despite the limitations, the study suggests a strong link between NbS interventions driving transformative change and underscores the urgent meed for expanded research to better understand NbS’ full potential.
