Last week we concluded our 'Managing Climate-Related Business Risks Through a Just Transition' webinar series with a session focussing on the role of businesses in preparing the workforce for a green economy. Thanks to our brilliant speakers Yulia Gershinkova at International Labour Organization, Shavanah Taj at Wales Trades Union Congress (The TUC), Richard Bate (Vice President IOSH, CFIOSH, FIIRSM, PMASSP) at IOSH, and Martha Selwyn at SSE Renewables for such an informative discussion. Key takeaways from the session 💡 ➡Proactiveness is core to a just transition – through social dialogue, companies can gather information from governments, trade unions, and skills councils to understand the changes that are likely to impact their workforce. ➡Companies that value the voice of their employees and understand the challenges, motives, and aspirations unique to their workforce will be best placed to optimise the positive impact that a green transition can have on them. ➡Focussing on transferable skills, upskilling programmes, and strength-based recruiting will allow companies to help people transition out of high-carbon roles and into low-carbon roles, as well as help manage the impacts of new technologies including AI on the future of work. ➡Workers will need to be protected against the physical impacts of climate change. For many industries, occupational health and safety measures must adapt to this increased risk. Investments in nature-harmful activities currently outweigh investments in nature-based solutions by more than 30 times. Businesses are well placed to contribute towards bridging the finance gap for nature-based solutions while also allowing them to move beyond net zero towards becoming ‘nature positive’. Join our upcoming webinar series on ‘Nature-Based Solutions for Business’, kindly supported by One Carbon World to discover how businesses can secure finance for their nature-based solutions so they can be deployed at scale. 💡 Have you read the Business Associations Climate Action Guide for Companies? Launched last month, the guide provides a step-by-step overview and recommended actions for how companies can assess and engage their business associations to support Paris-aligned policy agendas and, in turn, the delivery of their corporate climate transition plans. The guide was developed for business leaders, sustainability professionals, board members, and employees. We're pleased to have co-authored it alongside Exponential Roadmap Initiative, #RacetoZero of High-Level Climate Champions, We Mean Business Coalition, WBCSD – World Business Council for Sustainable Development, Climate Action for Associations, with technical support from InfluenceMap and Volans. 🔗 Find out more about how to execute the key steps below by accessing the guide here: https://lnkd.in/dJaCPSTD
