About us
The Ulysses Trust was borne out of a ground-breaking attempt in 1992 by the Territorial Army to achieve the first British winter ascent of Mt Everest (Project DARC STAR), led by Lt Col Philip Neame whilst commanding 10 PARA. A number of organizations who were approached for financial support proffered the view that the project was too fraught with risk for commercial sponsorship, but that they would be prepared to contribute funds through charitable donations. Philip took the hint, and the Ulysses Trust was formed, taking its name from Tennyson’s inspiring poem about the great ancient Greek warrior and adventurer. HRH the Prince of Wales, already a Patron of the expedition, agreed to become the Trust’s Patron. The thought was always that Project DARC STAR (with the Team by then drawn from reservists of all 3 services) might attract enough interest to create a surplus that could then be ploughed back into supporting future projects by reservists. In the 30 years since it was established, the Trust has provided over £3.6 million funding support to over 41,000 reservists and cadets variously participating in over 3,030 expeditions to worldwide locations. The Trust is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation registered with the Charity Commission of England and Wales, number: 1170600.

Ulysses Trust Ambassador Levison Wood is a world-renowned explorer, writer, & photographer. Known for his epic expeditions across the globe, like walking the length of the Nile and trekking through the Himalayas. On 15 July 2024 Lev shared his stories with a live audience of over 20,150 young people who signed-up to watch and listen online via Speakers for Schools and then asked questions. Don’t worry if you missed it, because the recording is available here: https://lnkd.in/eMj49v86 Here’s some of the feedback we received after the talk: “I learnt a valuable lesson: Confidence and experience are born out of adventure’ Risk, challenge and adventure teaches us life skills such as resourcefulness, self awareness and teamwork skills. It taught me about resilience and bravery. Woods taught me that even if we are unable to go to the Nile, or to Mount Everest, to practise stepping out of our comfort zone in our day to day lives for example you can make a lifelong friend out of a stranger.” “I really enjoyed listening to Levison Wood’s speech about being an explorer. It really taught me the value of exploration. And experiencing new things.” “Levison Wood advised us to network with people. This shows the power of networking and where it can get you due to the vast variety and diversity of the world around us. Levison alo inspired usc to be ambitious and keep following your dreams and we must strive to reach those outcomes.” “It taught us to be adventurous and get out of our comfort zone.” Many thanks to Levison Wood FRGS Chancellor of Staffordshire University for sharing his stories with these young people and encouraging them to try an adventure. Today we held our annual get together at HMS President on the side of the Thames. Our Chair Tim Seal gave a presentation which was followed by a Q&A session. Then Tim awarded silver badges to acknowledge over 5 years of volunteer service to Dan Tebay and Nigel Carr. A gold badge was presented to Julian Mosses for over 10 years of service. It was an excellent event and a wonderful opportunity to mix with fellow members of the team. Thanks to everyone who attended including ambassadors Sally Orange and Ray Mears and especially our hosts at HMS President.

One of our amazing supporters is Team Forces who have recently published their third Social Value Impact Report. It provides lots of information about how their support is contributing to the UK Government’s social value themes and objectives. Good to see that we are featured on page 16 alongside all the other projects and activities they support. Our CEO, Polly Marsh, commented: "Really proud that The Ulysses Trust can contribute to Team Forces Social Impact Report, who help us to provide funds that enable our cadets to and reserve forces to take part in adventurous Training, expeditions and challenging activities - to develop confidence and resilience - as well as life skills and values. The Trust has a large grant application committee to ensure our money goes where there is most need - those young people who would otherwise be unable to take part in these life changing activities for a wide array of social and economic reasons. Thank you to all the sponsors that support these young people through Team Forces." Thanks to all our supporters who help reservists, cadets and veterans to undertake adventurous activities through their support of the The Ulysses Trust - thank you! Team Forces is proud to announce its third Social Impact Report (SIR) for 2023 which covers the continued development of our collective contribution to the UK Government’s social value themes and objectives. Social Value underpins UK Government’s (HMG’s) sustainability and prosperity goals where suppliers that are successful in winning HMG contracts must demonstrate how they are the catalyst for Return on Investment (RoI) for the Crown, UK taxpayers and all citizens. This Team Forces Social Value Impact Report provides objective evidence of how we are operating as a Scale-Up organisation in the UK Defence & Security sector, super-charged by the incredible and incremental support of existing and new sponsors. #socialvalue #veteransupport #britisharmedforces #wellbeingthroughsport #mentalhealthmatters https://lnkd.in/eyUm4-AZ

Great to see this article in the South London Press which acknowledges the fantastic support we get from London Freemasons to enable young London cadets to undertake challenging expeditions. The London Freemasons’ Paul King said: “We love how the Ulysses Trust gives opportunities to young Londoners – and particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds – to develop skills which they will use for the rest of their lives and make them into better citizens.” Thank you London Freemasons! https://lnkd.in/eYkW3pfQ
