In our ''Summit Spotlight'' series, we’re highlighting insights shared by speakers during our September event held at IET: Birmingham Austin Court. Today, we're turning our attention to the UKTram Centre of Excellence (CoE), where Colin Robey and Vicki Matthews provided an update on CoE’s extensive achievements over the past twelve months: → Advancements in rear bogie derailment detection and standardised groove rail section design. → Expanding on the role of the Independent Competent Person (ICP) and refining business planning to improve governance and procurement. → Ongoing support for Network Rail’s Restoring Your Railway initiative, identifying Light Rail potential in projects like Thames Gateway and Stoke-on-Trent. With regular collaboration with the Department for Transport (DfT), United Kingdom and strategic feedback to simplify the TWA (Transport and Works Act) process, the CoE has become instrumental in identifying and advancing projects with transformational potential. Their recent initiatives, including a Design and Cost Working Group and cross-sector work on integrating Heavy Rail and Very Light Rail, emphasise a proactive and future-focused approach. The team’s dedication and impact were fittingly recognised at the Global Light Rail Awards the following month, where they were awarded Team of the Year. #lightrail #uktram #centreofexcellence #innovation #sustainability #tram #urbanmobility #awards #transport #lightrail #restoreyourrailway #rail

The latest light rail and tram statistics from the Department for Transport (DfT), United Kingdom, highlight NET Nottingham Trams’ 15.5 million journeys recorded in the year ending March 2024 - a 7.6% increase from the previous year. Connecting key areas of the city, the network operates with 50 stops and 37 trams. One tram can carry the equivalent of 170 cars, underlining the efficiency of light rail in reducing road congestion and emissions Since the first tram line launched in 2004, public transport use in Nottingham has surged from 67 million to nearly 80 million journeys. The network is supported by seven park-and-ride sites with over 5,000 spaces and it now offers convenient access to around 1,270 workplaces across the city. #publictransport #lightrail #nottinghamtram #nettram #sustainablecommute #urbantransit #trams #tramway #environmentalimpact

As part of our 2024 Summit recap series, we’re spotlighting each of our speakers. This year's event started with a warm welcome from our Chair, Stephen Edwards, who reminisced about his first visit to Birmingham in the 1980s. Birmingham, he noted, has transformed remarkably through its transport innovation, with light rail playing a pivotal role in connecting people to work, leisure and essential services. Stephen also discussed the newly appointed government's potential impact on the sector. While the administration's stance on light rail remains uncertain, UKTram is well-positioned to advocate for the undeniable social, economic and environmental benefits of light rail. Stephen emphasised that this shift represents a unique opportunity to enhance our engagement with government officials and the Department for Transport (DfT), United Kingdom, positioning us as a continued proactive voice for light rail's future in the UK. Nottingham’s own Sir Paul Smith is the latest star to have a NET Nottingham Trams tram named in his honour. The commemorative renaming comes in celebration of Sir Paul’s career, spanning over 50 years. He opened his first 3x3 metre store in Nottingham in 1970, and today, he has more than 130 shops across the globe. His iconic signature stripe and bold approach have influenced both fashion and popular culture, making him a fitting addition to NET’s lineup of trams named after local legends. In a beautiful touch, the tram features one of Sir Paul’s favourite quotes in his handwriting: ‘Every day is a new beginning.’ A reminder for all of us to embrace each day with fresh eyes and ambition. Congratulations to Sir Paul Smith on this well-deserved recognition, and well done to the NET team for recognising inspiring individuals through this fantastic tram tradition. #nottingham #communityhero #sirpaulsmith #publictransport #tram #tramway #lightrail
