10 UK teams developing innovative technology to purify water ice in the Moon’s soil have been named as finalists in the joint UK-Canada Aqualunar Challenge. 🌕 💧 The Aqualunar Challenge is part of a £1.2 million international prize funded by the UK Space Agency’s International Bilateral Fund and delivered by Challenge Works, in collaboration with the Canadian Space Agency | Agence spatiale canadienne and Impact Canada. Today, the UK Space Agency and European Space Agency - ESA have launched a plan to build on the success of the European Centre for Space Applications and Telecommunications (ECSAT) in Harwell. 🤝 The joint plan includes: 📡 Strengthening work on the centre’s 5G/6G hub 🔬 Exploring the potential for a space quantum technologies laboratory 🛰️ Further development of activities related to in-orbit servicing, assembly and manufacturing The UK Space Agency has also announced five new projects, worth £2.1 million, to help tackle key skills gaps identified by the UK space industry. 🚀 The funding will boost the availability of training programmes, courses and other learning interventions that can break down barriers to opportunities within this fast-growing sector. British astronaut Tim Peake CMG has been appointed as a Strategic Advisor for Axiom Space’s astronaut team to support the development of a commercially-sponsored UK astronaut mission. 🚀 Drawing on a wealth of experience and expertise, he will support the team’s strategy to confirm and secure funding for the mission, showcasing the viability of a commercially-funded pathway to space for the UK. 🚀 🛰 Our CEO, Paul Bate said: “Tim Peake is an incredible ambassador for the UK space sector and having him on board the Axiom Space team is a real boost for our work towards a UK astronaut mission. “Astronauts are the visible face of human spaceflight, but this mission is fundamentally about showcasing what space can do for citizens. Yesterday, the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology Secretary of State, Peter Kyle announced £33 million in funding to over 20 UK projects at the forefront of space innovation. The projects come from the National Space Innovation Programme (NSIP) – designed to invest in high-potential technologies and drive innovation and growth across the UK.
