Warning: this post contains discussions of child abuse. Kim wrote about her abuse in her diary when she was 13. Among the pages detailing trips to the shops with friends and visits to the cinema was her first disclosure. She was being abused. Kim spoke to her mum about what was happening when she was 14, and then the police, who helped start the recovery process. Watch the full video: https://lnkd.in/etGbMJ-E

Over 60 percent of women in prison report having experienced domestic violence. Of those who experienced abuse in childhood, more than two-thirds report being victims of sexual abuse. A Women’s Justice Board (WJB) will be established to address the unique and complex needs of women in, or at risk of, entering the criminal justice system. The WJB will focus on intervening early, diverting women away from the criminal justice system and increase the use of robust community sentences. It will also support women in custody to address the root causes of their crimes to help reduce reoffending. Read more: https://lnkd.in/er4m2m7V

Last week, alongside the Ministry of Justice UK we launched the Reverse Pitch, a pioneering initiative that brings together start-ups and government teams to co-create innovative solutions that improve the citizen experience. At the heart of the events is a unique approach to collaboration. Instead of pitching to investors or partners, start-ups will be working directly with government teams to identify and solve complex challenges facing citizens and the departments. We believe this collaborative approach can drive real change and improve the lives of millions of people across the UK. Find out more about the Reverse Pitch events from Minister for Transformation Andrew Western, Department for Work and Pensions CDIO Rich Corbridge and Ministry of Justice Director General for Service Transformation Megan Lee-Devlin. If you’re a start-up with a passion for innovation and a desire to make a real difference in people's lives, then you can apply here: https://lnkd.in/eKRZAbFs #ReversePitch

Tackling the root causes of crime helps reduce reoffending. Offenders who are sentenced to mental health treatment as part of their community sentence are less likely to reoffend than those serving a short prison sentence, a new study has found. Community Sentence Treatment Requirements (CSTRs) can be added to a community sentence for offenders with mental health, drug or alcohol issues. CSTRs can address the underlying causes of offending and help cut crime with more intensive supervision from probation staff and treatment that can last up to three years. The Youth Justice and Sentencing Minister, Sir Nic Dakin, recently visited our first Secure School to see how this new approach to youth justice helps children in custody make better life choices. Oasis Restore Secure School combines academic learning with personal development and tailored support services to address the root causes of offending. This approach helps young people move away from crime and reintegrate into society, supporting our commitment to safer streets and better futures for children.
