University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB) is one of the largest teaching hospital trusts in England.

About us

University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB) is one of the largest teaching hospital trusts in England, serving a regional, national and international population. It includes Birmingham Heartlands Hospital, the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, Solihull Hospital and Community Services, Good Hope Hospital in Sutton Coldfield and Birmingham Chest Clinic. We also run a number of smaller satellite units, allowing people to be treated as close to home as possible. We see and treat more than 2.2 million people every year across our sites and our hospitals deliver more babies than anywhere else in Europe. We are a regional centre for cancer, trauma, renal dialysis, burns and plastics, HIV and AIDS, as well as respiratory conditions like cystic fibrosis. We also have expertise in premature baby care, bone marrow transplants and thoracic surgery and have the largest solid organ transplantation programme in Europe. We provide a series of highly specialist cardiac, liver and neurosurgery services to patients from across the UK. We are world-renowned for our trauma care and have developed pioneering surgical techniques in the management of ballistic and blast injuries, including bespoke surgical solutions for previously unseen injuries. As a result of its clinical expertise in treating trauma patients and military casualties, the QEHB has been designated both a Level 1 Trauma Centre and host of the UK’s only £20m National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Surgical Reconstruction and Microbiology Research Centre (SRMRC). We have over 24,000 members of staff and we are committed to investing in their development and their health and wellbeing. UHB is a Stonewall Diversity Champion and aims to achieve positive change for LGBTQ people by creating an inclusive, inspiring and equal environment for both staff and service users.

  • “It sounds quite a cliché, really, but believe in yourself. If you've got a passion to do something else, make sure you follow it, because your happiness is the most important thing.”   Nick is a senior data officer in the liver research team at University Hospitals Birmingham. After a career in hospitality, Nick came to the NHS because he wanted to help people and enrolled on a business administration apprenticeship through The Learning Hub, our dedicated careers service. Now, he has progressed to a senior role and has had the opportunity to travel with his work. Nick said: “I feel like there are a lot more opportunities in this job. As opposed to my previous career in hospitality, where I felt I was stuck in a rut. Everyone here is a lot more positive and supportive of my development.” Read more about Nick and his career in this week’s, ‘We are UHB’ blog.

  • 𝐊𝐧𝐨𝐜𝐤𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞! 🥊 Kind-hearted staff at Heartlands Hospital pulled no punches arranging for a teenager, who has a rare type of cancer, to meet his heroes. Boxing mad Ollie from Birmingham was treated to a surprise meeting with GB Boxing as they continued their preparations ahead of the Paris Olympics. Earlier this year, Ollie was rushed to Heartlands Hospital, after his leg broke whilst boxing in his local gym. It turned out that a tumour had caused the horrific break and tests soon revealed that the16-year-old was suffering from a very rare type of bone cancer, that affects one in 1.5 million people. Ollie made the brave decision to have his leg amputated, to stop the cancer from spreading further. Moved by Ollie's incredible bravery and spirit, our compassionate staff decided to do something special for him. They reached out to GB Boxing, who were preparing for the Paris 2024 Olympics, and arranged for Ollie to meet his heroes at the home of national boxing, The Lions’ Den, based at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield. 🇬🇧 Carla Lally, Senior Emergency Practitioner said: “Ollie’s courage has been inspiring for all of us. We wanted to give him a memorable experience, and thanks to the generosity of GB Boxing, we made it happen. Seeing Ollie's smile was priceless.” 💙

Having started her career as a qualified hairdresser, Anne Marie embarked on her NHS career back in 2009. Her advice to anyone considering taking the next step in their NHS career is: “Don’t be frightened to be yourself.” Read more about Anne Marie and her career in this week’s ‘We are UHB’ blog.

  • 𝐀𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞... We are thrilled to announce that UHB in collaboration with the Royal Centre for Defence Medicine and the Defence Medical Academy has won the Partnership Working Award at the 2024 Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS) Awards. 🏆 Our collaboration has created a pioneering programme to train military biomedical scientists, adding 15 registered professionals to the defence pool since 2022 with a 100% pass rate. Congratulations to Daniel Kearns, Head Biomedical Scientist in our liver laboratory team, for winning the Biomedical Science Leader Award! 🥇 Judges said: “The pastoral role Daniel undertakes is exemplary, showing empathy and compassion at all levels. An excellent role model who always maintains the individual at the centre, he promotes the profession on a daily basis.” A huge well done is also in order for Birmingham Quality, which is part of UHB and provides external quality assessments for clinical chemistry labs across the NHS, for getting shortlisted in the ‘Best Use of Research, Innovation or Technology’ category.👏
