Meet UCLH clinical nurse specialist Jackie Turner, who is celebrating an incredible milestone – 50 years’ service in the NHS. Jackie started her training in 1974 at UCLH’s legacy hospital – the former Middlesex Hospital London and has worked in various roles across London before returning to UCLH as a fracture clinic sister for more than 20 years. Jackie has now been a clinical nurse specialist here for the past 12 years, treating post-operative patients with a range of hand conditions. Vanessa Sweeney, chief nurse, said “Jackie embodies the spirit and values of UCLH and of nursing as a profession. It’s evident from her remarkable career that her enthusiasm, dedication and knowledge has helped many people, and will inspire many more.” David Probert, chief executive, said “It makes me immensely proud to hear Jackie’s story, and of the commitment and compassion she brings to her role. In 2025, we are opening an MRI unit as part of an exciting new centre for neuroscience on Grays Inn Road in central London. There will be five of the latest high-tech MRI scanners in the new centre, in addition to the five existing MRI scanners at Queen Square. We are hiring radiographers to join our neuroradiology team. The neuroradiology team will work across both sites and play a key role in diagnosing and treating patients, as well as allowing more patients to take part in research studies for brain conditions. A clinical trial at UCLH will investigate whether a new type of immune therapy can prevent colorectal #cancer from returning. The trial – which at UCLH is led by consultant medical oncologist Dr Kai-Keen Shiu – will involve patients who have had stage 2 or 3 rectal cancer or stage 3 colon cancer and who have had their tumour completely removed surgically – but who are found to have circulating tumour DNA (ctDNA) in their blood. The study is part of a groundbreaking #NHS programme called The Cancer Vaccine Launch Pad to help trial and develop new cancer immunotherapies. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/eCacH2GZ

“It’s easy to send off samples and the test will help protect patients in the future.” Nurses can now offer extended blood group testing to anyone with #sicklecell and thalassaemia. Bernadette is UCLH’s lead haemoglobinopathy clinical nurse specialist and just one of many nurses being encouraged by NHS Blood and Transplant to offer the test to their patients. Congratulations to our UCLH colleagues Professor Jamshed Bomanji and Professor Mervyn Singer who have both been awarded an OBE in the King’s Birthday Honours 2024 list. Prof Bomanji has been recognised for services to the NHS and to global nuclear medicine and Prof Singer has been recognised for services to intensive care. UCLH chief executive David Probert said: “I am immensely pleased that the work of our staff has been recognised in this way. UCLH employs very many dedicated individuals who work tirelessly in rather challenging circumstances to do their best by our patients. Both Professor Bomanji and Professor Singer are exceptionally talented individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to science and healthcare.
