This important study by King's College London and funded by our colleagues at North Central London Cancer Alliance and North East London Cancer Alliance could lead to a major change in tackling the low uptake of cervical screening in England.
Do-it-yourself human papillomavirus (HPV) tests could enable more than a million more women in England to participate in cervical screening over the next three years. The results of the research study carried out in north and east London offering a self-sampling kit to patients who are overdue their cervical screening are published today in eClinicalMedicine, a Lancet journal. The YouScreen study was conducted by King's College London and funded and supported by us and North East London Cancer Alliance. The study provided self-sampling kits to test for HPV to women and people with a cervix who were at least six months overdue for their cervical screening. 133 local GP practices participated in offering the kits either opportunistically to their patients during a medical appointment or enabling the kit to be mailed directly to overdue patients. Lead author Anita L. said: “Self-sampling has been hailed as a game-changer for cervical screening and we now have evidence in a UK population to show that it really is… " https://lnkd.in/dPsTpr9M There are so many people and organisations to thank for this complex collaboration, which had the additional challenge of the pandemic, but we got through! "It's a privilege to work with such great people and, of course, our patients. I think you learn so much about people, everyone's so different. That's why I love working in a clinic, because everyone's completely diverse in every way. I never really considered anything else." Meet UCLH clinical nurse specialist Jackie Turner, who is celebrating an incredible milestone – 50 years’ service in the NHS. Jackie started her training in 1974 at UCLH’s legacy hospital – the former Middlesex Hospital London and has worked in various roles across London before returning to UCLH as a fracture clinic sister for more than 20 years. Jackie has now been a clinical nurse specialist here for the past 12 years, treating post-operative patients with a range of hand conditions. Vanessa Sweeney, chief nurse, said “Jackie embodies the spirit and values of UCLH and of nursing as a profession. It’s evident from her remarkable career that her enthusiasm, dedication and knowledge has helped many people, and will inspire many more.” David Probert, chief executive, said “It makes me immensely proud to hear Jackie’s story, and of the commitment and compassion she brings to her role. Her wealth of expertise and skill is a credit to UCLH, and I would like to congratulate her on this incredible milestone.” Find out more about Jackie's remarkable 50 years’ service: https://buff.ly/4bqoVoc #NHS76 #OneTeam
