This week, Tony Blair opened the Future of Britain conference with a speech which centred on governing in the age of AI. Key to this speech was examining how a radical rethink of the system, and embracing generative AI technology, among others, can help us all to address the triple whammy of high tax, heavy debt and poor outcomes. Part of this focus was on health and how, with a bold approach to embracing technology, “For the first time, a healthcare system geared to prevention rather than cure is within our grasp”. I share his ambition for bold action on the use of AI to drive prevention and I joined Tunstall because I recognise and embrace the potential of next-gen technology to catalyse change. We have teams across our global business exploring its potential to support people to live fuller lives, more independently at home—for longer periods of time. But, before we can begin to realise the potential in the UK, we first need to shore up our health and care technology infrastructure. AI is essentially predicated on an established digital infrastructure being in place to drive insights that can actually lead to interventions that help people. And right now, in the UK across the health and care landscape, many remain in early stages of digitalisation. This is especially true in our industry of telecare. We need government to act to invest in this baseline digital infrastructure first and foremost. What’s more, radical thinking in this area MUST start with thinking about the vulnerable we are trying to help—those that create the most cost across the wider health and care system when they linger in hospital beds or prematurely need advanced support from care homes. We have to consider what preventative healthcare actually means. It’s not just preventing disease—it’s helping people live healthier for longer. That means we need to move from a medical approach to a person-centred approach. Using technology – generative AI or otherwise – to support a more predictive model of care that helps us understand, predict and prevent the actual causes of deterioration and lack of independence should be a clear focus. We should strive to truly think radically— not simply replicate the highly medicalised processes we apply today and make them digital. We need to start with the vulnerable person and take the opportunity to redesign our systems around their needs. Next-generation technology-enabled care can help predict events before they happen—and support prevention at scale by focusing the right people on the right interventions at the right time. But rethinking the system, as Mr Blair describes, must mean starting with the people and not simply tweaking the system that already exists to leverage AI because without thinking of the person and the system that supports them first—we won’t deliver the radical change he envisages.
