Trafford is a thriving, diverse, prosperous, and culturally vibrant borough sitting at the heart of Greater Manchester.

About us

In 1974, Trafford Council was created to administer the newly formed Trafford Metropolitan Borough. Trafford's centre of administration is Trafford Town Hall – named Stretford Town Hall before 1974 – designated a Grade II listed building in 2007. On its formation in 1974, the council was controlled by the Conservative Party; the Conservatives have been in control 1973–85, 1988–94, and 2004 to the present. The only time the Labour Party was in control was 1996–2002. The rest of the time were periods of no overall control. The council meets to decide policy and allocate budget. Its duties include setting levels of council tax, monitoring the health service in Trafford, providing social care, facilitating the local democratic process, ensuring clean and maintained neighbourhoods, and good local education. Trafford Council was assessed by the Audit Commission and judged to be "improving strongly" in providing services for local people. Overall the council was awarded "three star" status meaning it was "performing well" and "consistently above minimum requirements", similar to 46% of all local authorities. In 2008–09, Trafford council had a budget of £150.5 million. This was collected from council tax (57%) and government grants (43%). The council spent £31.8 million on children and young people's services (21%); £60.1 million on community services and social care (40%); £34.4 million on "prosperity, planning, and development" (23%); and £33.8 million on customer and corporate services (22%).

Whether you walk, drive, or ride, getting about in Trafford just became safer and more enjoyable. Two improved junctions opened to the public this week at the Talbot Road / Chester Road and Talbot Road / Great Stone Road junctions. The junctions provide a way for cyclists, pedestrians and vehicles to safely travel through the junction whilst remaining segregated from one another, which will improve the safety of all road users. We want to thank our friends from Transport for Greater Manchester and South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority for joining us for the day. Read the full story: https://ow.ly/9uI650SKNaI

    • At a road junction, a group of cyclists wait at a new crossing point. Among them is Lanky the Giraffe. A new cycle lane runs around the traffic island where the group is stood, with a zebra crossing visible in the front of frame. Behind the group, there are some cars waiting at the junction, and behind that, houses.

A team of independent financial specialists have been asked by Trafford Council to conduct a financial check-up of the organisation to help it to continue to balance its budget in the future. The Council has asked financial experts the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy (CIPFA) to conduct the review to make sure it is managing its finances well and to help identify any further savings that could be potentially made. The process, which will start next week, 29 July, and comes after more than £306 million of budget pressures the Council has faced in recent years. Read more about the process here:

Trafford Council is celebrating the success of Tech4All, its scheme to tackle digital exclusion. Over the last few weeks, the Council and tech-refurb partner Community Computers handed 265 laptops to families in need at pop-up shops in Old Trafford, Lostock, Altrincham and Sale. The retired devices, made available by a generous donation from local housing association L&Q, were professionally refurbished before being distributed to those in need at the cut-price cost of £60. Read the full story of the scheme's success here: https://lnkd.in/dyaCwCat If you've got ex-business devices that could have a second life supporting disadvantaged families, why not donate them to our campaign? Contact [email protected] to find out more.
