We're building the #SuperSewer for future generations and reconnecting London with the River Thames
About us
Tideway's Super Sewer is upgrading London's infrastructure to cope with demands well into the 22nd century and reconnecting the city with the iconic River Thames. The Thames Tideway Tunnel is a 25 kilometre interception, storage and transfer tunnel running up to 65 metres below the river. Starting in west London, the main tunnel generally follows the route of the River Thames to Limehouse, where it then continues north-east to Abbey Mills Pumping Station near Stratford. There it will be connected to the Lee Tunnel, which will transfer the sewage to Beckton Sewage Treatment Works. Overflows of untreated sewage into the River Thames add up to tens of millions of tonnes every year. London's sewerage system relies on an integrated network of combined sewer overflows (CSOs). At the time it was built, the CSOs would release flows through discharge points along the river during heavy storms. Originally, this would happen once or twice a year, it now happens on a weekly basis and no longer requires a storm to trigger overflows. By intercepting the sewage before it enters the river, the Thames Tideway Tunnel will help prevent the River Thames from being polluted with untreated sewage which can stay in the river for up to three months before the ebb and flow of the tide finally takes it out to sea. Patricia has worked as a Senior Project Manager at Acton Storm Tanks, our most westerly site and the start of the Super Sewer. One of the things she loves most about her job is seeing the plan become a reality and be used by the public. Check out Patricia's interview here: https://ow.ly/MXWl50TsSY7

🌊ICYMI🌊 #WorldRiversDay Tideway is injecting additional funding into The Active Thames programme which co-ordinated by the Port of London Authority and encourages communities to get active in and around the River Thames. In our latest video we visited the Parkinson's UK Greenwich Support Group to take a walk by the river, and dropped in on the Shadwell Basin Outdoor Activity Centre where young people get a chance to get out on the water: https://lnkd.in/eJ49Ywkh

"The soul of London." A brilliant description of the River Thames from Londoner Toby, who says he gets so much out of walking beside, and rowing on, the Thames. In the year that the Tideway London project starts to protect the tidal river from sewage pollution, it feels fitting for us to support Active Thames in 2024. Co-ordinated by the Port of London Authority and with partners such as Paddle UK, British Rowing, Royal Yachting Association (RYA), and London Sport, the programme encourages communities to get active on or beside the River Thames and its inland waterways. Tideway’s 2024 funding has supported 11 projects from west London to Kent - eight on-water groups (rowing, paddling, sailing) and three walking. I’ve recently had the privilege of seeing the impact of Active Thames at first hand, meeting inspiring people like Toby and Suzanne who take part in weekly walks with the Parkinson's UK Greenwich support group and seeing young people from east London going on the Thames for the first time thanks to Shadwell Basin Outdoor Activity Centre. We want the Tideway project to re-connect people with their river and this film shows the positive effect that this connection with water can have, at any age. Many thanks to Jenny Cooper-Low, Emmeline Endresen and Chris Sawyer from the PLA for their work leading the Active Thames programme and to the brilliant charities and community organisations who make such a difference.

London’s rivers have been neglected and damaged by pollution for too long. That’s why we’re bringing partners together to clean up the capital’s rivers. I visited the Thames Tideway project with Secretary of State Steve Reed.
