On Sunday 18 August, Mayor of Thurrock, Cllr Kairen Raper, joined the Thurrock Nepalese (Gurkha) Community and Purfleet Heritage and Military Centre to lay a wreath at the unveiling of Thurrock’s first Gurkha war monument. Our Trading Standards Team enlisted the help of a 'super nose' to help during one of their latest investigations - meet Billy, the working cocker spaniel, whose enhanced sense of smell helped find a large amount of illegal tobacco hidden within compartments of a wall and under the counter of a shop in Grays. Thanks to the hard work of the team - and Billy - over the course of their investigation they seized 972 illegal cigarettes, 115 pouches of counterfeit rolling tobacco and 1,873 illegal vapes from Shelby's in Clarence Road. Last Friday (9 August), Southend Magistrates Court ordered the shop owner Dilsha Rashed, 41, of Lee Gardens, West Midlands, to pay £2,700 in fines, £3,000 costs and a £1,080 victim surcharge. Counterfeit products can have a detrimental effect on the health and wellbeing of our communities. Thurrock Council has launched a High Court lawsuit against businessman Liam Kavanagh and investment company Rockfire Capital Ltd to recover misappropriated investment funds. Cllr John Kent, Leader of Thurrock Council, said: “We have an obligation to Thurrock residents to recover as much money as possible and we will pursue these claims as vigorously as possible."
