Lizards have a specialised skill of darting into hiding at the slightest sound. Sand lizards are especially elusive and can only be found in Dorset, Hampshire and Surrey 🔎 If you do spot a common lizard, make sure you don't confuse it with a newt! 🔎 How have our woods changed in the last 50 years?   In 1971, the late professor Robert Bunce set out to survey the trees, shrubs, plants and soils found in 103 British woodlands. The survey was then repeated in 2001.   With support from UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (UKCEH), Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, the Welsh Government, Natural England, players of People's Postcode Lottery and other organisations, we commissioned a repeat of the original 'Bunce survey' in 2021, allowing us to build a groundbreaking database on how Britain's woods and plant communities have changed over the last 50 years. The results are staggering and though no two woods are alike, we've already detected several key changes: 🕶️ Our woods are shadier, with fewer canopy gaps, and they are composed of fewer, older, and larger trees. 🌼 Shade tolerant plants found on the forest floor have increased but some species, such as wood sorrel, have become rarer in our woods. 🌳 Climate change is altering the make-up of tree communities; holly has become more common than hawthorn and beech in broadleaf woods. ⚠️ Dutch elm disease, ash dieback and unsustainable deer grazing are amongst the top drivers of change in broadleaf woods. 💚 The data shows how our woods are responding to multiple stresses, but also reveal the value of the work done by woodland and forest managers. 🌷 In the places where a diverse woodland structure has been created, with canopy gaps and glades, plant species richness has increased. 👉 Read the Bunce report, and learn more about the groundbreaking woodland survey behind it here: https://lnkd.in/e-K9Mnzt 📸 UKCEH, Robert Read / WTML, Milosz Guzowski, Laurie Campbell / WTML, IFFF-BOKU / Thomas Kirisits, Kim Calders.
