Supporting high-achieving students from low-income backgrounds across the UK into top universities and careers.

About us

We’re working towards a society where talent from all social backgrounds is nurtured, harnessed and rewarded. We unlock potential, broaden horizons and create opportunities, with and for ambitious young people who face structural barriers in education and work because of their socioeconomic background. We create more social mobility through our three interventions: - Directly supporting young people: We nurture the knowledge, confidence and networks of high-achieving young people through our programmes. - Influencing employers: We influence employers to ensure people people with potential can get in and get on in professional life. - Advocating for social mobility: We campaign on structural social mobility issues and amplify the voices of young people from lower socioeconomic backgrounds.

We invited our friends at The Social Mobility Foundation, for National Inclusion Week, to join us today to talk about how to make sure the workplace is accessible for everyone!🌟 People from lower socioeconomic backgrounds are often underrepresented in the charity sector, which means we’re all missing out the creativity, insight and talent that’ll make our charity better for everyone. We’re ready to start changing this, so we’ll be looking out for the Social Mobility Employer Index Report, which gives employers the tools to create workplaces where everyone can thrive!🚀

  • ⬇️ New social mobility stats for the UK financial sector ⬇️ Progress Together’s second annual data report has found that the percentage of people from a lower socioeconomic background working in senior roles in UK financial services has increased, from 26% in 2023 to 28% today. 📈 This shows the importance of data collection and cross-sector collaboration. And it shows that progress is possible. But it also tells us there’s more to be done. It’s still far lower than the percentage for the UK workforce as a whole, where 39% come from a lower socioeconomic background. And the percentage of those in senior positions who went to an independent school is 21% – three times the national figure. It’s time for more employers to join the movement for change. Our Social Mobility Employer Index can help. It offers tailored, practical insights and support that will drive progress, wherever you are in your social mobility journey. Each and every employer that joins is a leader in creating workplaces where everyone can thrive, regardless of their background. 🚀 Find out more at our webinar on Thursday 17th October from 1.00 - 2.00pm. We’ll share insights and best practice from 2024’s entrants and show you how to take your own first steps. Register here: https://lnkd.in/eSHsn-2q

📈 The percentage of people from lower socio-economic backgrounds in senior roles in #financialservices has increased from 26% to 28%. 📈 Today we launch Progress Together’s 2024 data report - Shaping the Sector - a study of 200,000 financial services employees in the UK. It shows that cracks are beginning to show in the financial services ‘class ceiling’ but there’s still work to be done. Some other key findings from the report – which was compiled in collaboration with our data partner Bridge Group - include:  🔹 58% of employees are sharing socio-economic background data, up from 49% in 2023.  🔹Levels of socio-economic diversity reduce as seniority increases: 58% of those at senior levels are from a higher socio-economic background, compared with 45% at junior levels.  🔹The proportion who attended an independent school is 21% among those in senior positions – three times the national percentage of 6.5%.  🔹White men from higher socio-economic backgrounds are 33 times more likely to be found in senior roles in financial services compared with ethnic minority women from a lower socio-economic background.   🔹People from a higher socio-economic background are promoted on average six months faster than those from a lower socio-economic background.    We’re working with financial services firms and advising them to:    🔹Set goals and be accountable for change.  🔹Explore the relationship between socio-economic background and performance.   🔹Develop talent and leadership.  🔹Implement policies and approaches that measure and ensure greater equality in work / client / project distribution by socio-economic background.  🔹Explore the experiences and perspectives of employees to help inform action.     A diverse corporate culture is associated with a wide range of benefits including:     🔹Better decision making through reducing groupthink 🔹Being better placed to serve the needs of customers from all backgrounds  🔹Greater productivity and business success while reducing recruitment costs  🔹The ability to attract top talent from the widest possible pool of candidates    You can find out more in the full report: https://lnkd.in/eU3TvjNy   Help to build a more inclusive financial services sector. Derian, Hannah, Roxanne, Lily, Phoebe, and Claire were challenged by The Social Mobility Foundation to create graphics, illustrations, and animations for a social media campaign highlighting the lack of social mobility in the creative sector. Our Creative Media students then had the opportunity to showcase their outstanding work at the Class in the Creative Sector Exhibition, which promotes working-class representation in the creative industries. • Chartered Management Institute's report shows that there's more to be done to create a truly inclusive workplace culture 🌟 You don't have to solve this problem alone. Our Employer Index is open to everyone, wherever you are on your social mobility journey 🚀 You can start by attending our webinar to hear why you should join the movement to make workplaces more representative, innovative, and successful 👇 https://lnkd.in/d5PiWxrv "Employees from lower socio-economic backgrounds were...significantly less likely to agree that workplace inclusivity is high on the agenda for their organisation’s Board of Directors / Trustees or other governance bodies...compared to those from intermediate or high socioeconomic backgrounds." 📉

Are we truly walking the walk when it comes to inclusivity? 🤔 Our latest report shows a significant gap between what HR thinks is working and what employees are saying when it comes to equality, diversity, and inclusion (EDI). Informed by the CMI’s Everyone Economy Advisory Committee and led by Sir Trevor Phillips, our report gathers evidence showing how meaningful workplace inclusion benefits individuals, employers, and the wider economy. 👉 Read the full report to discover key recommendations for managers and leaders to drive positive change: https://bit.ly/3zlDxIt
