Changing the World One Smile at a Time
About us
Smile Train is the world’s largest cleft charity with a sustainable approach to a single, solvable problem: cleft lip and palate. Many children around the world are living with untreated clefts. Most have difficulties eating, breathing, hearing, and speaking. Cleft repair surgery is simple, and the transformation is immediate. Our sustainable model provides training, funding and resources to empower local doctors in 90 countries to provide 100%-free cleft repair surgery and comprehensive cleft care in their own communities. We use the “teach a man to fish” model, which focuses on training local medical professionals. Those doctors then go on to train other doctors creating a long-term, sustainable system. Patients see their transformed smile for the first time, parents cry tears of joy, lives and communities are changed forever. As a result of our efficiency and with the support of our donors and partners around the world, Smile Train has transformed the lives of more than two million children by giving them the power of a smile.

From our #BeautyInEverySmile campaign, we learned that 39% of the UK population don't know what a cleft is. In honour of #CleftAwarenessMonth, here's Matilda, a Smile Train Ambassador, sharing what a cleft is to raise awareness of the experiences of cleft-affected people in the UK.

After he was born, Kyle was brought up by his grandparents and relatives and was always surrounded by love and support. Even though he kept his spirits high, children around him would subject him to bullying because of his cleft. His uncle heard about Smile Train, and his family made the long journey to the nearest partner hospital in the Philippines. Kyle was never embarrassed to show off his smile, but now, after his surgery, he cannot stop smiling. This #CleftAwarenessMonth, help more children like Kyle receive their forever smiles: https://lnkd.in/eecHqKDm

It's official, our #BigSmileTeaParty has reached overseas! 🌎🫖 Why not hold your own event for all the tea lovers at your office? Ashley Barbour from the USA is joining in with all the fun, and you should too!: "I just love tea. Growing up, I always had afternoon tea at my grandma’s house. She’d pour us each a cup and set out a plate of Keebler cookies. We chatted and sipped, the sun streaming in through her kitchen window. During The Great Depression, my grandma fell in love with the Royal Albert Greenwood Tree tea set, but she couldn’t afford to purchase the whole thing all at once. So, each week, after she got paid, she’d walk down to the store and buy a new piece, until she had collected the whole set. When my grandma was in hospice at the end of her life, she stopped eating and drinking. There were tiny sponges on the ends of sticks that we dipped in liquid and wet her mouth. Sometimes she wanted tea that way. In had been a while since I heard her speak but one time, when I gave her a taste of Twining’s Earl Grey, she said, “Mmm, I just love tea.” Me too, I thought. After she passed, I inherited the Greenwood tea set, pictured here. The UK branch of Smile Train is hosting tea party fundraisers all month long. I’m participating from across the pond celebrating cleft, my grandma, and of course, our shared love of tea. 🫖

Happy #CleftAwarenessMonth! Trinoy's family were not prepared for him to be born with a cleft. Thankfully, when he turned nine, a neighbour introduced them to our local medical partner in Bangladesh, meaning Trinoy is one step closer from achieving his dreams. ⚽️ Read more: https://lnkd.in/eZ7x_rVy
