We’ve opened up shop. The UK’s first-ever on-demand mental health service, right in the High Street in Shoreditch. We will be open seven days a week offering access to a good conversation to a qualified person. Not just for when people are feeling shit or overwhelmed — but for when they want to proactively work on their mental health. Just like they would go to the gym for their physical health. The space will also be a new home for workshops and group sessions, a meeting point for like-minded people wanting to do the work with other people. A place for community. We know that it doesn’t take “everyone in the world” to positively shift the culture around mental health, but only a small, determined group who refuse to shy away from the conversation. This is you. Everytime you walk through the door, you give permission to others to do the same. Every time you share a post, every time you tell a friend about us, every time you talk about therapy or how you really feel — these are all small acts that will help to reshape the perception of mental health in wider society and contribute massively toward an enduring good. Founded in 2017, Self Space was launched to help address a growing need for accessible and contemporary mental health support. We provide flexible, forward thinking therapy for some of the most progressive global companies from a broad range of creative and corporate industries, including tech, finance, advertising, marketing, hospitality and fashion. These are companies who want to help their people in maintaining good mental health and reaching their potential. In a world which can sometimes be challenging, frightening, overwhelming, complex and seriously hard to navigate, it’s not surprising that sometimes we don't feel ok. Everyday mental maintenance is an essential part of not just surviving, but thriving. 3 things we do to make sure our off-sites don't turn into off-shites: 1. Make sure the structure is baggy enough to move within. It helps us respond to how the team are feeling and what they need. 2. Slow it down. Even slower. Move at a different rhythm to what you're used to. We spend time frolicking around on a little guided foraging walk. Regulated the old nervous system, instead of just being a nervous-system. 3. Bring the self. We looked at therapeutic, reflective exercises and got to know each other on a much deeper level. We all bring our full selves to work; our job is to make sure we're doing that consciously. And with compassion for each other. Also, make space for craic. So don't get us wrong, meetings are often much more productive than emails. But they don't need to be long. The therapist Jacques Lacan used to mix up the timings of his therapy sessions, they could be anything from 2 minutes to a couple of hours. It just depended on what he felt the client needed and when ending the meeting would have the optimal impact. We might take a leaf from his book. Life's too short for 60 minute meetings that could have been 10.
