  • What role should economic growth, societal well-being, and national security play in determining which technologies are "critical"? A new report published today in collaboration with The Foundation For Science and Technology examines the technological prioritisation efforts of past governments and explores key principles which can be used to guide future efforts. The new #CriticalTechnologies report, which was informed by a roundtable, highlighted four major themes: 1. Purpose 🎯 – a joined up and clear approach. 2. Security 🔒 – identifying and prioritising technologies for national security and resilience. 3. Analysis 🔍 – prioritisation necessitates a rigorous research and analysis procedure. 4. Ecosystem 🌐 – developing a robust and inclusive ecosystem for technology development. Explore the full report: https://lnkd.in/ed8TiJEi

  • Applications for the 2025 APEX Awards are now open. The awards, jointly awarded with The British Academy and The Royal Society, offer established independent researchers the opportunity to pursue interdisciplinary and curiosity-driven research with partners from different disciplines across the sciences, engineering, social sciences and humanities. 💥 New for this round of the award, researchers are now able to apply for up to £200,000 to support their research projects. The funding can be used to contribute to research assistants and technical support, as well as requests for funding for public engagement work related to the project. Could an APEX Award help you to address complex challenges with solutions beyond the scope of a single discipline? Join next week's webinar to find out more about the changes to the 2025 round and the application process: 📅 Tuesday 8 October, 3pm https://bit.ly/3XIaR4y [Image text reads: 'APEX Awards. • Currently open for applications, our #GreenFutureFellowships ‘aim to supercharge investment in climate solutions by enabling the scaling up of innovative technologies’, as Julia King, Baroness Brown of Cambridge, explains in The Environment. The programme will provide innovators, scientists, researchers and engineers with the space and time they need to transform their cutting-edge ideas into commercially viable, scalable engineering solutions for a greener future. Over the next five years, it will grant at least 50 awards of up to £3 million each to develop the best ideas and scalable technologies with the potential for reducing greenhouse gas emissions or for adapting to the impacts of climate change. • Today marks the start of Black History Month. This October, the Academy is reflecting on the importance of #ReclaimingNarratives and ensuring that the engineering profession reflects the richness of our society. From facilitating the transition of students from underrepresented backgrounds into engineering employment, to carrying out research to uncover barriers to progress within the engineering landscape, we are proud to play a role in helping to enhance engineering. For more on our work: - MSc Motorsport Scholarship Programme Supporting individuals from Black or mixed Black ethnic backgrounds who wish to study a master’s degree in motorsport: https://lnkd.in/eGygmzur - Diversity Impact Programme Providing grant funding of up to £100,000 for new projects in universities that address the unequal outcomes experienced by students from underrepresented groups: https://lnkd.in/eKyy6u2y - Graduate Engineering Engagement Programme Supporting UK engineering students and recent graduates from under-represented backgrounds into engineering employment: https://lnkd.in/emdBgwjz - Hamilton Commission Honorary Academy Fellow and F1 driver Sir Lewis Hamilton MBE and the Academy, have published The Hamilton Commission report, 'Accelerating Change: Improving Representation of Black People in UK Motorsport'. This report identifies the key barriers to recruitment and progression of Black people in UK motorsport: https://lnkd.in/e8aFhTS8 - EDI Literature Review A literature review examining the evidence on Equality, Diversity, and Inclusivity (EDI) in engineering in the UK over the past decade. Our report showed that only 11.4% of employees in engineering occupations are from minority ethnic groups, compared to 28.2% of the working-age population in the UK.
