🎉 July was a milestone month for the New Zealand & Oceania Region!🎉 The Mission to Seafarers Oceania Region proudly celebrated 125 years of dedicated service to seafarers during “Sea Week” from 8-14 July 2024. The highlight of the week was an elegant evening at Government House on Thursday, 11 July, where current and past Port Chaplains, their families, volunteers, and supporters of The Mission to Seafarers gathered for a special gala dinner. Hosted by His Excellency Dr. Richard Davies, the Patron of The Mission to Seafarers Oceania Region, the event paid tribute to the incredible legacy of care and commitment that has touched countless lives over the past 125 years. The Mission to Seafarers stands firmly with Captain Vitaly Tyutkalo, who has been unjustly held in Sri Lanka for over three years following the tragic fire aboard the X-Press Pearl. Despite his valiant efforts to save his vessel and crew, Captain Vitaly remains unable to return home due to protracted legal proceedings and a confiscated passport. As detailed in Seatrade Maritime’s latest article, the urgency of Captain Vitaly’s situation cannot be overstated. His dedication and bravery during the crisis are evident, yet he continues to face uncertainty and detention with no end in sight. We urge the international maritime community to join us in advocating for Captain Vitaly’s swift release. It is vital that the authorities expedite his case so he can finally return to his family after years of separation. 🎉 Huge congratulations to Steven Jones FRSA from all of us at The Mission to Seafarers! 🎉 He has been awarded the prestigious Merchant Navy Medal for his unwavering dedication to championing the mental well-being of those who work at sea through the Seafarers Happiness Index (SHI). Steven, a true advocate for seafarers, created the SHI in partnership with MtS in 2015 to monitor maritime workers' mood and mental health. This work has been crucial in helping shipping companies provide targeted support, especially during the challenging times of the pandemic. But Steven's impact doesn't stop there. He also played a pivotal role in securing the release of the Chennai Six, a group of British maritime security guards unjustly jailed in India. His relentless campaigning highlighted the harsh conditions they faced, ultimately leading to their release in 2017. Steven is one of nine remarkable sailors receiving this honour for their extraordinary contributions to safety, welfare, and training in the maritime industry. His words resonate deeply: "It's absolutely vital that seafarers have a voice, are listened to by the industry, and seen by society." We’re thrilled to celebrate Steven's achievements and his ongoing commitment to shining a light on the vital work that seafarers do. The nine recipients will receive their medals on 5 November.
