About us

The Language Shop is one of the UK's leading providers of interpreting, translation and examination services to the private and public sector. We provide a range of language services, including face-to-face, video and telephone interpreting, British Sign Language interpreting and document translation. Our linguists are experienced in over 250 languages, including rare and regional dialects from countries all over the world. We are the sole provider to some of London's biggest NHS Trusts, local authorities, charities and clinical commissioning groups. Our digital examination service allows candidates to sit their exams through recorded or online assessments from anywhere in the world at any time. We are the leading provider of remote foreign language assessments to UK government. Our clients include the Ministry of Defence and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, for whom we assess the language skills of military personnel and diplomatic staff. We developed an online digital platform for the University of West London to allow music students to continue to take their exams during Covid-19. The success of the platform has led to it becoming a permanent offering for London College of Music Examinations. TLS is also the single approved supplier of Quality Assurance services on the Crown Commerical Service Language Services framework (RM6141). We provide a QA service across the Ministry of Justice's language service proivders to ensure they are of the highest standard.

Since 2017, the event has been endorsed by the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights. This year there is a focus on wellness, so there will be a World Afro Day Walk and Talk in London – register here or go to the World Afro Day website to find out more: www.worldafroday.com 22 September – Mabon, Wicca and Pagan Also known as the Autumn Equinox and mid-harvest festival, Mabon celebrates the end of summer and the equal balance of light and dark hours in the day. As it traditionally a time of plenty, for Pagans and Wiccans it is celebrated by giving thanks for what we have and sharing with others.

It’s International Day of Sign Languages on 23 September. Have you ever used a sign language interpreter? It requires a slightly different approach from one of our spoken language bookings. Our British Sign Language interpreters are very skilled and experienced, and can put you at ease if it’s your first time using the service. To help you and your service user get the absolute best from the booking, here are some points to bear in mind, from charity Deaf Action: 1. Talk to the Deaf person, not the interpreter, and address them directly, ie don’t say ‘tell him/her…’. 2. Make a seating plan in advance and ensure that the Deaf service user has a clear view of you and the interpreter. 3. If you have any information that might help the interpreter prepare for the booking, please send it in advance. 4. Book as far in advance as possible – BSL interpreters are in very high demand nationally! #BSL #BritishSignLanguage

    🌟 The TLS 50% DPSI grant is back! 🌟 TLS Learn has announced a new round of funding to be given as grants to interpreters seeking to qualify for Ministry of Justice (MoJ) assignments, providing 50% funding towards the DPSI-Law qualification. To sign up to our newsletter simply click the link below: https://lnkd.in/gyYpPiJw On the ground - training delivered to maternity and labour ward staff: Communication with healthcare professionals when preparing for and giving birth is vital for mums’ and babies’ health outcomes. TLS delivered on the ground training to at least 60 staff members at Queen’s Hospital, showing them how to access our on-demand services quickly and easily via PRISM. Four virtual sessions were then offered to 32 staff who were unable to attend in person. PRISM is our dedicated device for accessing remote interpreting services in clinical settings. It has been designed by us to make our services as easy to use and accessible as possible, both for NHS staff and patients. It provides a screen on a fully articulating wheeled stand, through which both video and telephone services can be accessed quickly and with a minimum of fuss. To sign up to our newsletter simply click the link below: https://lnkd.in/gyYpPiJw Language Fact File Spanish is the (or an) official language in: Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay, and Venezuela, Puerto Rico, Spain and Equatorial Guinea. Number of native speakers: approximately 500m. Learn some: Spanish is a global super language, so many of us already know the basics – greetings, pleasantries etc. If you are too convincing with those and you need to explain to someone that you don’t really speak Spanish, it’s “lo siento, no hablo español”! Fast facts: Although the language is named after its country of origin, Spain, it is actually the largest of several regional languages spoken there. What we call Spanish is castellano, or Castilian. In Spain, there are also: Basque, Catalan, Valencian and Galician. Across the world, there are also significant variations in vocabulary and pronunciation, especially among Latin American countries. After Mandarin Chinese, Spanish is the second most widely spoken language in the world, and growing! Unlike Mandarin, Spanish is written phonetically, which means that once you know the rules of pronunciation, you can read anything, even if you don’t know what it means. While it is no longer spoken as an official language in the Philippines, Spanish heavily influenced Tagalog, of which 33% of words are Spanish. Four languages are also based on Spanish: Papiamento, Chavacano, Palanquero and Yopará. #FrenchLanguage #LanguageFacts

José (Enti) Bracamonte and Susana (Marisú) Basagoitia both work as Spanish interpreters. I was onboarded on the same day as my wife. We have always worked together (over 25 years now), so we were both very happy that The Language Shop accepted us. We are very grateful. Marisú: I am an English/Spanish interpreter, and I very much enjoy helping TLS clients communicate with their service users. I mostly do telephone interpretation work, but I also enjoy helping people communicate through video calls and face-to-face. What’s been your favourite project at TLS? Enti: The conversations we are brought into are obviously important to the parties involved, so I approach them all with the same keen spirit of service. That said, beyond my honest desire to help others, also lies a selfish desire to learn and grow that can only be fulfilled with experience; therefore, every telephone call, every video call, every face-to-face conversation is important to me. Marisú: Although I can’t say that I have any favourite projects, I do love working with people and helping in any way I can. I really do my best to facilitate communication by speaking calmly, clearly and carefully, finding the most appropriate words for the situation. To sign up to our newsletter simply click the link below: https://lnkd.in/gyYpPiJw On 23 August we mark International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition. While the Transatlantic Slave Trade is consigned to history, modern slavery and human trafficking remain current problems. Victims of this sort of crime require an especially sensitive approach, one that takes into account the specific nature of the harms they have suffered. If you need an interpreter to work with a victim of human trafficking or slavery, please let us know when you make your booking.  Here are some points to bear in mind: - At the time of the booking, it is especially important to ensure a private space, where the conversation cannot be overheard by anyone but you, the service user and our interpreter. This applies to remote interpreting contexts too. - If you need to record the conversation, be explicit about who the recording will be shared with. - Set and agree all boundaries in advance, for example a signal that everyone can recognise that the service user wishes to pause the conversation. - Language and culture can be areas of particular sensitivity, as traffickers can rely on victims’ inability to communicate in a foreign country. We will always match regional varieties of language as closely as possible. #charities #trauma #support #inclusion
