About us
The Lancet began as an independent, international weekly general medical journal founded in 1823 by Thomas Wakley. Since its first issue (Oct 5, 1823), the journal has strived to make science widely available so that medicine can serve and transform society, and positively impact the lives of people. Over the past two centuries, The Lancet has sought to address urgent topics in our society, initiate debate, put science into context, and influence decision makers around the world. The Lancet has evolved as a family of journals but retains at its core the belief that medicine must serve society, that knowledge must transform society, that the best science must lead to better lives. The Lancet is a trade mark of RELX Intellectual Properties SA, used under license.

July 28th marks #WorldHepatitisDay. The headline figures from the 2024 WHO Global Hepatitis Report make for grim reading. In 2022: ▶️1·3 million people died from viral hepatitis: an increase from 2019 estimates, and second only to COVID-19 as the leading communicable cause of death. ▶️around 2·2 million individuals were newly infected with hepatitis B or C and an estimated 304 million were living with these viruses: both lower than 2019 estimates, but still unacceptably high. We have the tools to eliminate viral hepatitis by 2030, but efforts to do so are not on track. Action is needed now to change the trajectory. Fractures affect a substantial proportion of people with obesity, constituting a considerable public health burden. There are several reasons for this, including adverse effects of adipose tissue on bone and muscle and, in many people, the coexistence of type 2 diabetes. Although weight loss in people with obesity has many health benefits, it can also have adverse skeletal effects, with increased bone loss and fracture risk. With obesity nearly tripling over the past 50 years, "[p]riorities for future research include the development of effective approaches to reduce fracture risk in people with obesity and the investigation of the effects of GLP-1 receptor agonists on bone loss resulting from weight reduction", say authors in The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology. “If we give health-harming industries the freedom to sell whatever they like to whomever they like at whatever price they like, then we will have to deal with the dire consequences for public health.” The tobacco, ultra-processed food, fossil fuel, and alcohol industries together account for some 19 million deaths worldwide every year. In the WHO European region alone, more than 26,000 people die each year as a result of diets high in sugar-sweetened beverages. In The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology, authors discuss a new report from the WHO Regional Office for Europe on the commercial determinants of non-communicable diseases, which stresses the need for systemic reform: https://hubs.li/Q02GKqG30

📢 New findings on the impact of alcohol health-warning labels! The recent WHO/Europe study was conducted across 14 European countries with over 19,000 participants. Here are the key takeaways: 📈 Increased awareness: Exposure to cancer warning labels on alcohol significantly increased knowledge about the link between alcohol and cancer across all countries, regardless of the label format. 🏷️Acceptance of different labels: Cancer messages were perceived more impactful and relevant when compared to general health harm and responsibility messages. Among cancer messages, labels containing only text or including a warning symbol were perceived as more acceptable compared to labels containing graphic image. 👥 Universal Impact: The effect on knowledge was consistent across various demographic groups, making these labels a universal tool for educating the public about the risks of alcohol, including cancer. This study reinforces the importance of clear health warnings on alcohol containers. Consumers have the right to know about the risks associated with alcohol consumption, to make healthier and informed choices! Projections suggest more than 30 million people may be diagnosed with cancer in 2040, a 67% increase in 20 years. The global burden of cancer is immense, growing, and afflicts low- and middle-income countries most severely. “The public health response should be commensurately ambitious”, say co-chairs of an upcoming Lancet Commission: the CONCORD–Lancet Global Commission on Cancer.
