Did you miss the second of our Building World Class teams events? Don't worry! Click the link below to catch up with a full recording of what was a brilliant discussion full of practical steps you can take to improve retention. https://lnkd.in/eJU2TDix #engineering #edi #retention
The second in our ongoing series, Building World Class teams supported by Royal Academy of Engineering happened last week. The focus this time was on retention - the all important question of what you should do to keep the brilliant people you’ve managed to recruit. We got a lot of insight from the brilliant panel, facilitate by Melissa Sabella with just a few snippets below: ⭐ Sally Kennard shared the importance of gathering data to decide the focus to improve your culture. She described using this data to test your assumptions about how things are going and involving everyone in the organisation in implementing next steps. She also discussed the importance of building and designing all processes with inclusion at the centre so it’s not an afterthought or tag on. ⭐ Pavneet Khurana shared some of her previous research speaking to women who became entrepreneurs. She expected to hear that they took this step to fulfil a life goal and ambition. Instead what she heard was “I had to step away, I had to leave”. She stressed the importance of proactively looking to understand the triggers for why people might leave. She also shared the crucial role onboarding plays in retention; over 60% of new employees are likely to leave a new job within a year if they have a bad onboarding experience. ⭐ James Kusena PhD shared the role that recognition and reward can play in ensuring people stay, particularly in industries such as engineering and science. This might mean ensuring people are listed on publications and invited to events and conferences. These might not seem significant to leaders but could be hugely significant for those early in their career. He also discussed the idea of a ‘life rise’ where a pay rise may not be possible. What can an organisation do to increase someone’s quality of life? ⭐ Brian Evje stressed the importance of leaders getting comfortable with themselves and their power as a leader in order to properly manage the responsibility of leading a team. He also discussed a common mistake in fast growing teams; thinking about recruitment as a hiring challenge rather than a change challenge. When a team is growing from 5 to 10, the first 5 need to be involved in the process. I'm excited for the next event in the series, happening the 5th of September. More information to follow soon, please do join us!
