A week on from Pakistan's first ever gold, everyone is talking about Arshad Nadeem's journey. Bamboo spears and crowdfunding, let us explain: Pakistan, a nation of 234m, just celebrated its first ever individual gold! Now a national icon, Arshad's journey has been far from easy... At the start of his javelin career, Arshad spent a year using a bamboo stick fitted with bent iron pieces at the front, made from a local ironsmith. His training conditions? Arshad revealed how he'd often throw it out of the tiny training stadium, when not slipping on the uneven ground... The youth competitions would often run out of tape when measuring his throws! Even after winning silver in the 2023 World Championships, he had to seek crowd-funding for a new javelin, as his old one had worn out. The first Pakistani to qualify for the final of any track and field event, he not only went on to win Olympic gold but set a new Olympic record! We're huge fans of Arshad Nadeem and his journey, inspirational 👏
