HALO is helping Kosovo’s growing tourism sector to thrive! 🇽🇰 The small city of Peja is the gateway to hiking trails and mountain pursuits, but for 25 years the presence of unexploded cluster bombs on the slopes overlooking the town have prevented visitors from enjoying this beautiful area. Thanks to funding from the U.S. Department of State, HALO has been able to clear those cluster bombs and make the land safe for tourists to return. “HALO’s work gives access to people for recreation, to connect trails from Peja, to the hills and then to the mountains,” says Virtyt Morina, Head of Tourism, Peja City. Our mission is to protect lives and restore the livelihoods of those affected by conflict.
About us
The HALO Trust is the world’s largest humanitarian mine clearance organisation. We save lives and restore communities threatened by landmines and other weapons of war, such as cluster bombs, stockpiles of small arms and improvised explosive devices (IEDs). Our work creates safe and secure environments in some of the world’s most vulnerable communities. We lift local families out of poverty by creating jobs for deminers and we prepare the way for development and long term stability. Born out of a desire to help the people of Afghanistan in 1988, we now employ an international staff of 7,500 (subject to slight variation) including our UK headquarters, USA office and programmes in 30 countries and territories. The HALO Trust is a company limited by guarantee. Registered in England No. 2228587. Registered Charity No. 1001813 & SC037870. Registered Office: 50 Broadway, London SW1H 0BL. The HALO Trust (USA), Inc. is a 501(c)(3) corporation. Registered as a charity in Scotland No. SC039625. Office: 1730 Rhode Island Ave NW, Suite 403, Washington, DC 20036.

This week, #TheHALOTrust Sri Lanka was delighted to welcome Aiko Kato and Janani Thambaiah from the Embassy of Japan as they visited Mantivu island, where our clearance work has been carried out by Japanese-funded teams. To date, HALO teams have safely cleared 540 anti-personnel mines on Mantivu island. Clearance is expected to directly benefit around 460 people, mostly fishermen, who live in Gowtharymunai village. The island and surrounding coastal areas provide local communities with a vital source of income, and cleared areas will grant access to new fishing grounds that were previously inaccessible or deemed too dangerous. Thank you to The Government of Japan for funding this vital work.

We would like to thank the UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy for visiting HALO and MAG (Mines Advisory Group) in Laos today, where we provided an update on our UK-funded work. This was an opportunity to see the continuing impact of unexploded bombs left behind from the Vietnam War – some half a century later - and our ongoing work to clear these threats and make the land safe to return to local communities. Thank you to the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office for supporting this work, to help create safe and secure environments where communities can live freely without fear of the deadly threat of landmines and unexploded ordnance.

Thanks to our partnership with the non-profit organisation Days for Girls UK, HALO is providing female staff with education on women’s health issues, nutrition, gender-based violence, and reproductive health. In addition, with the support of Days for Girls UK, relevant training materials will be developed, translated into local languages, and shared across HALO’s programmes. Also, 1,500 female staff across HALO will receive long-lasting, reusable sanitary kits. HALO #Angola started training sessions in April with our medical supervisors, and these are ongoing. 💙

It was a pleasure to welcome a delegation from the U.S. Department of State to HALO Sri Lanka last week. The delegation visited Muhamalai, Sri Lanka’s largest and densest minefield, where State Department funding has enabled us to clear 2.6sqkm of land. They also met with members of the local community, who were able to resettle land there in 2022. The visit then moved on to Kokkuthoduvai, an area in which #TheHALOTrust has already destroyed over 20,000 items of explosive ordnance, but where almost 7sqkm still awaits clearance. A big thank you to the Department of State, which has supported our humanitarian mine clearance in Northern Sri Lanka for 19 years.

HALO CEO James Cowan: “Ignoring Afghanistan is not only a humanitarian omission, but also an omission of our national interest." "The Taliban represent value systems that we don’t agree with, but that does not mean that we should simply have nothing to do with them. Between detachment and appeasement lies a pragmatic, patient, persistent diplomacy.” "The Taliban also want this mine and IED contamination gone." ✍️ Anthony Loyd, for The Times, on #TheHALOTrust's 36 years of life-saving work in Afghanistan: https://bit.ly/3WfO7Iv
