From years to days, AI is transforming how we predict the weather with unmatched speed and precision. I posted previously that the most exciting advancements in AI are its ability to speed up product development and time to market drastically. In that example, Tesla's Full Self-Driving updates were used. https://lnkd.in/eFnV_PWY ⛈ This leap is particularly transformative in fields like weather prediction, where understanding our planet's dynamics is crucial. Take ignitia, a pioneer in tropical weather forecasting. Historically, developing accurate weather models for tropical regions, such as West Africa, was a time-consuming process. Back in 2015, building a model for a single country could take up to 5 years. The challenge was that traditional meteorological models, designed for mid-latitude climates, struggled with the unique convective processes driving tropical rains, leading to significant forecast errors. 🏃♀️ Enter AI. Since integrating AI into its operations in 2017, Ignitia has reduced the model development time from 5 years to just 2 years and expanded its reach to larger areas, including Brazil. By 2023, it achieved a breakthrough: developing a comprehensive weather model for the entire continent of Africa in just 3 months, with an impressive average rainfall accuracy of 88%. I think we will be at days very soon! In Nature and Climate Tech, time to market is one of the greatest hurdles and costs. Overcoming the challenge of lengthy time-to-market can be a game-changer not only for startups but customers too. ignitia's achievements in accelerating weather model development highlight the immense potential AI holds in transforming industries by enabling faster, more accurate solutions. This is why I believe the application of AI to understand Nature and the field of NatureTech could be one of the greatest unlocks in adaption and, importantly, productivity. August the 1st is Earth Overshoot Day. It signifies that humanity is using nature 1.7 times faster than our planet’s ecosystems can regenerate. This overshoot is possible because people can harvest more than is being renewed, thereby depleting natural capital and compromising resource security. The consequences of ecological overspending are evident in deforestation, soil erosion, biodiversity loss, and the buildup of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, which leads to more frequent extreme weather events and reduced food production. Although Earth Overshoot Day has held steady for a decade, it occurs early in the year, just after 7 months have passed. For the remainder of the year, humanity lives from overuse, further depleting the biosphere. Therefore, even as the date holds steady, the pressure on the planet keeps increasing since damage from overshoot accumulates over time. This statement is from a compelling new report highlighting the significant economic and environmental returns of investing in natural capital to achieve the UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030. 👍 𝐌𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐄𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐜 𝐑𝐞𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐬: The study suggests a required investment of $7.4 trillion in nature-related SDG targets could yield an economic return of $152 trillion—about $20 for every dollar invested. 🥗 🍃𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐄𝐧𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐁𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐟𝐢𝐭𝐬: • Avoidance of 4.5 million premature deaths annually. • Prevention of over 27 million hectares of deforestation. • Reduction of natural resource extraction by nearly 18 billion tonnes. • Restoration of 250 million hectares of agricultural land. • Expansion of protected areas both on land and in marine environments. 🌐 𝐆𝐥𝐨𝐛𝐚𝐥 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐭: The focus was on 40 countries, representing 80% of global GDP, population, and emissions, highlighting the universal benefits of such investments. 🚨𝐏𝐫𝐢𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐀𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐬:  • Ecosystem protection and restoration are top priorities, with the potential to close 34% of the natural capital gap.  • Addressing air pollution and resource consumption could yield significant benefits, especially in major economies like the USA, India, and China. 🌍 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐁𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐟𝐢𝐭𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐃𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐑𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬: Sub-Saharan African countries, particularly, stand to gain from investments in water, sanitation, and land restoration. 📣𝐂𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐭𝐨 𝐀𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: The report urges an end to harmful subsidies, increased protected areas, and the adoption of nature-based solutions. It emphasises shifting beyond GDP to measure accurate holistic returns, aligning with global frameworks like the COP15 Biodiversity Plan. Investing in nature goes beyond mere benefits—it's essential for sustainable development and a prosperous future.
