Earlier in the summer, our chief executive, Lisa Pinney MBE, had the pleasure of sitting down with Matt Masters for the Truth about Local Government Podcast. They spoke at length about our partnership work with local authorities across Great Britain to support communities living in coalfield areas. To further support local authority partners, we’ve now shared more details on our organisation which is available to view on their website: https://lnkd.in/eVnGCqZM If you’d like to listen back to the podcast, visit: https://lnkd.in/dmwJN-5n

Following the successful launch of mine water heat opportunity maps for Wales, we're delighted to announce the release of similar maps for 10 major cities in England. These maps, can be accessed here https://lnkd.in/gNsQXBM2 and have been produced as part of the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero’s (DESNZ) Heat Network Zoning pilot project [https://lnkd.in/ekt6UmPm]. They are designed to help identify prime locations for the development of open-loop mine water heat schemes. The new assets cover Sunderland, Stoke-on-Trent, Sheffield, Nottingham, Newcastle, Manchester, Leeds, Coventry, Bristol, and Birmingham. They are freely available to download and offer a valuable tool for local authorities, developers, and energy providers seeking to explore sustainable heating options through mine water heat. The maps and report are an essential part of DESNZ’s strategy to support low-carbon heat networks. By identifying optimal locations for mine water heat development, these resources will play a crucial role in supporting England’s transition to greener energy and in achieving its net-zero ambitions. Our dedicated mine water heat team is on hand to support organisations looking to benefit from mine water heat - get in touch to find out more: ☎ 0345 762 6848 📧 [email protected]

🌿 This week we’ve been recognising the work we do to protect local waterways as part of World Rivers Day 2024, and today we’re visiting A-Winning 🌿 Nestled near Alfreton in Derbyshire, the A-Winning Mine Water Treatment Scheme (MWTS) plays a crucial role in safeguarding both the River Amber and one of the Midlands' most important drinking water sources. 💧 By treating water from the former Alfreton Colliery, A-Winning removes contaminants like iron, ensuring they don’t enter local watercourses. This not only helps maintain high water quality but also supports a healthy ecosystem in the area. 🌊🐟 The project was no small feat! With high volumes of water to manage and the need for careful coordination with the mining operator, A-Winning showcases innovation and engineering at its best. One standout feature is the pipe bridge that transports treated water across a brook, highlighting our commitment to protecting the environment in every detail. 🏞️🚰 Thank you to all of our amazing partners and staff who help with the essential work of our 80 MWTS across Great Britain and their role in preserving our precious water resources! 🌍💙 #WorldRiversDay #WaterQuality #EnvironmentalProtection #Innovation #MineWaterTreatment #CoalfieldCommunities

Today we're shining the spotlight on the Dawdon Mine Water Treatment Scheme as we recognise our work to protect local waterways following World Rivers Day 2024 🌊 Located in the heart of County Durham, the Dawdon scheme is one of the largest of our 80 Mine Water Treatment Schemes (MWTS) across Great Britain, playing a crucial role in protecting our environment and local communities. 💧🌍 By treating water from the former coal mines beneath the North Sea, Dawdon helps prevent pollution of our coastal waters, including the local drinking water aquifer that supplies 30,000 people. The water, rich in iron, creates a striking ochre orange deposit—this by-product is then repurposed for various uses, like pigment production. 🎨 We're proud to say that during the construction of the plant, we recycled 89% of the waste, around 135 tonnes of material! 🌿 And every year, Dawdon treats about 2,200 million litres of mine water, using innovative solutions like solar panels and a mine water heat system, making this scheme a true trailblazer in sustainable practices. 🌞🔋 Join us in celebrating the vital work of Dawdon MWTS this #WorldRiversDay and the difference it makes in protecting our precious water resources. #Sustainability #WaterProtection #Innovation #CommunityCare #DawdonMWTS #MineWaterTreatment

🌍 Celebrating World Rivers Day 2024 with the Six Bells Mine Water Treatment Scheme 🌊 Located in the heart of South Wales, the Six Bells Mine Water Treatment Scheme (MWTS) is a key player in protecting our rivers and waterways. Treating over 2.5 million litres of mine water daily from the former Six Bells Colliery, this scheme is vital in preventing iron and other contaminants from entering the River Ebbw, safeguarding this essential watercourse for the community. 💧 Built in 2002, the Six Bells MWTS was established after a significant discharge from the Vivian shaft threatened to pollute the Afon Ebbw Fach with its distinctive orange, ochreous water. Thanks to a refurbishment in 2021, this facility continues to operate at maximum efficiency. 🌿🏞️ With 14 Mine Water Treatment Schemes across Wales, we are dedicated to safeguarding our drinking water and rivers, ensuring a healthy environment for generations to come. 🚰 Join us in celebrating #WorldRiversDay and recognising the essential work of our schemes, like Six Bells, in maintaining clean and safe rivers. 🌿💚 #WaterProtection #EnvironmentalStewardship #CoalfieldCommunities #MineWaterTreatment #Wales
