Last Monday evening our monitoring team spotted this limping bull elephant in the company of two other bulls. It was clearly in need of treatment, and our Saving Meru's Giants monitoring team called the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) veterinarian. As it was late in the evening it wasn't possible to treat the bull, so our monitoring team was out early the next morning to find him. Once we'd tracked him down we contacted KWS who were able to attend and tranquilize him. The bull had a prominent swelling around his left knee joint, but no external injuries. Dr Aminga, the vet, advised that given the lack of fluid accumulation and limited joint movement, the injury was like the result of an old knee joint dislocation and a minor closed fracture. They administered anti-inflammatories, antibiotics, and medication to manage the pain, swelling and mobility. After his treatment, the bull rejoined his companions and KWS is hopeful for his recovery!

Some exciting news from our beehive fence project in Meru - more than 60% of the beehives have bees living in them – known as hive occupancy! The more hives that are occupied, the more effective the beehive fences are likely to be at deterring foraging elephants from crop raiding. This helps protect the farmers’ livelihoods, supplement their income through honey production, and reduces negative interactions with elephants. A positive step forward for promoting coexistence between people and elephants in Meru!

Say hi to Tenagne, who's worked at our Ensessa Kotteh sanctuary in Ethiopia for more than 11 years! Tenagne says: "I've always had a great time here since day one - all the years have been good years. For the future I aspire to see peoples' ownership of wild animals to end and for the animals to spend their lives in freedom." Thank you for all that you do, Tenagne!

We are extremely saddened to share that we recently had to say goodbye to our beloved 16-year-old lion Louga, at our sanctuary in South Africa 💔 After spending many years forced to perform in a circus, Louga arrived at our sanctuary with his companions Angela, Bellone and Saïda in 2022. We lavished them with the best possible care and it was heartwarming to see how they transformed in their new home. Heartbreaking as it is to let him go, we are honoured to have been able to provide Louga with a wonderful life at our sanctuary. We've laid Louga to rest next to Sami, our rescued leopard, in our Garden of Remembrance. Animal Care Manager Glen said "He is amongst good friends." 🧡 Thank you to all our supporters for helping us give Louga peace and happiness. Read our full tribute👇 https://lnkd.in/eVkHwmz3

Time and again South Lakes Safari Zoo shows recurring issues, from poor hygiene and stereotypical behaviour in animals, to untrained staff and poor management. Our previous investigations resulted in council Special Inspections being conducted at the zoo - and since then a zoo inspection discovered "major causes for concern." A new study published in the prestigious nature journal Scientific Reports has undermined the very premise on which badger culling has operated for the past 11 years. This latest robust peer-reviewed study confirms what we have said all along – that there is no good evidence to suggest that badgers are a significant source of bovine TB in cattle, and that there is no justification for culling them. The public, farmers, and most of all the badgers themselves, have been badly let down. Read more 👇 https://lnkd.in/ebS2mhEj

We caught up with Dr Matthew McLennan from Bulindi Chimpanzee and Community Project to find out what happened, and how the project is supporting communities to live safely alongside chimpanzees 👇 https://lnkd.in/eDsRPGD8
