We are delighted to be able to finally confirm that the Textile Recycling Association is one of partners that will help to deliver a £4 million project to develop and pilot a pioneering fully-integrated, automated sorting and pre-processing plant for waste textiles, which could eventually divert thousands of tonnes from the waste stream each year. The Autosort for Circular Textiles Demonstrator (ACT UK) is a two-year project that will support the transition from uneconomic manual sorting of clothes and textiles that are not suitable for resale to highly-automated sorting and pre-processing, which can then be used as feedstock for existing and emerging recycling processes. The project is being supported by funding from the Circular Fashion Programme supported by Innovate UK, the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) and the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC), all part of UK Research and Innovation (UKRI). The lead organisation is UKFT Association with close involvement from Circle-8 Textile Ecosystems. As well as the Textile Recycling Association the other partners that will help to deliver this project are IBM, Marks and Spencer, Tesco, PANGAIA, New Look, Reskinned, Salvation Army Trading Company Ltd (SATCoL), Oxfam Wastesavers, Textile Recycling International Limited, Shred Station Ltd, Worn Again Technologies, English Fine Cottons, ALEX-BEGG AND COMPANY, Camira, Manufacturing Technology Centre, University of Leeds, The University of Huddersfield and WRAP. The Textile Recycling Association would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Steve Reed MP on his recent appointment as secretary of state for environment. We are looking forward to engaging with the Environment Secretary and arranging a round table discussion regarding the essential introduction of an EPR scheme and the appalling condition of the UK post consumer textiles sector. The sector is on its knees; needing urgent, government intervention to support this essential industry within the UK waste hierarchy, which is at risk of being irreparably damaged. The following articles highlight the challenges faced by the sector: https://lnkd.in/eps37nrJ https://lnkd.in/esygEdVS https://lnkd.in/eWGAY9QQ Textile merchants have provided a valuable service to the British public for well over a century, with some merchants now running as 2nd and 3rd generation family-owned businesses which shows how dedicated they are and how much this essential industry means to them. The sector is pivotal in diverting over 620,000 tonnes of textile waste in the UK alone, and with 1 in every 25 jobs directly linked to the textile industry it is paramount that the UK government recognises the importance this industry plays in the UK economy and responds quickly to this emergency. A long overdue EPR scheme will certainly be a boost for the sector, but by no means can it be considered to be the silver bullet that will solve the issues of over production and over consumption.

The Textile Recycling Association says Shein’s announcement of a Circularity Fund is equivalent to “Shell throwing a tissue at an oil spill”. The Chinese online fashion retailer this week launched the fund, pledging €200 million in the UK and EU over the next five years for circularity projects. Donald Tang, Shein’s executive chairman, said the company’s scale and reach could make it a “catalyst” for the widespread adoption of circular solutions. Mohamed Patel, business development manager at the TRA said Shein business model was based around speed and affordability over sustainability. “We at the TRA wonder whether this is an honest attempt to improve the industry or another way to divert our gaze and damage control to their reputation,” he said. https://lnkd.in/gghQ_84T
