About us

We work for and with communities, helping them come to life by walking, wheeling and cycling to create healthier places and happier lives for everyone. Across the UK we involve communities in shaping our towns and cities. Together we campaign for and create spaces where everyone can move around safely and give people the tools and confidence to get out of their cars. We inspire people to change the way we all travel every day, forging closer connections with our neighbours and reducing traffic to create a better environment and more sustainable society for everyone. Join us on our journey. www.sustrans.org.uk

Did you read your local #WalkingCyclingIndex report and wonder what the UK-wide data was? Look no further - we have now published our report that aggregates data from across the UK. 💡 Sustrans’ Walking and Cycling Index, the largest independent survey of active travel in the UK, has revealed that a majority (56%) of people want to shift investment in road building schemes to funding options for walking, wheeling, cycling and public transport. 🚶♀️ 👨🦽 🚲 The report also shows greater public demand for active travel over driving, with 50% wanting to walk more and 43% wanting to cycle more. A third of people want to make greater use of public transport. #Sustrans #ActiveTravel #SustainableTransport #Cycling #Walking Read all about it here 👇 https://lnkd.in/ebN_u23T

Sustrans Employee Spotlight - meet Amelia! Amelia Carman is a Principal Engineer in Scotland’s Design, Engineering, Assurance and Mobility Planning team, and joined Sustrans 6 months ago. When asked what she enjoys the most about her job, Amelia had this to say: "Getting out and visiting our projects, both current and past. I found it quite hard at the beginning to connect what I was doing day-to-day to the value which I knew that Sustrans delivered. By going out and cycling some of the routes that the team has worked on and seeing all the different people using it, from cyclists to dog walkers to parents pushing buggies, it really helps to motivate me and gives me a sense of purpose (which is why I joined Sustrans in the first place!)" #Sustrans #MeetTheTeam

Our North team worked with Sheffield City Council and the Trans Pennine Trail to resurface and widen part of the Five Weirs Walk on the section between East Coast Road and Stephenson Road. This now allows mobility scooters, larger buggies and cycles to access the route. Thanks to all the local people who worked with us to improve this beautiful section of the Five Weirs Walk 🙏 It’s a great example of how the National Cycle Network can play a big part in connecting communities and accessing nature🌱 🦋 🦔

Clean Air Day is a national campaign to raise awareness of the problems caused by poor air quality and takes place every 3rd Thursday in June each year 🌬️ To mark the day, Sustrans invites people to ditch the car for the day and either walk, cycle or take public transport in an effort to lower air pollution levels 🚶♀️ 🚴♀️ 🚌 One school, Holy Cross Primary School in Plymouth, Devon, took part a few years ago with an organised bike ride and walk to school. This video shows what a positive event it was and the changes put in place by the school to encourage more people to leave their car at home, walking, wheeling and cycling instead 🍃 #Sustrans #ActiveTravel #SustainableTransport #Cycling #Walking

Paddle boarding might not be the first thing you'd think of when committing to an Active Travel Challenge, but for Rachel Reid, a Senior Civil Engineer with Doran Consulting in Belfast it was the obvious choice 🏄♀️ When Rachel's workplace signed up for the challenge in June, Rachel saw it as the perfect opportunity to get her board out on the River Lagan for her commute to work. Sustrans Employee Spotlight - meet Chris! Chris Bentley is Head of Communications and has worked at Sustrans for just over 3 years. When asked what he enjoys the most about his job, Chris had this to say: "Highlighting the impact of our work at a grassroots level. A really simple project, such as the extension or resurfacing of a path, might seem mundane but the positive effect that can have on communities and individuals should never be underestimated and demonstrating it through the stories of real people is so rewarding." #Sustrans #MeetTheTeam

The new Secretary of State for Transport, Louise Haigh, has announced her 5 priorities for the Department for Transport. They include: 1️⃣ improving performance on the railways and driving forward rail reform 2️⃣ improving bus services and growing usage across the country 3️⃣ transforming infrastructure to work for the whole country, promoting social mobility and tackling regional inequality 4️⃣ delivering greener transport 5️⃣ better integrating transport networks Rachel White, Head of Public Affairs at Sustrans, made this statement in response. You can read the Sustrans manifesto for the 2024 election here: 👉 https://lnkd.in/edP7FaTR [Image text reads: “Improving choice and reducing inequality in how we travel is a welcome priority for the new government. We need to make it easier, safer and more accessible to walk, wheel and cycle “This transformation can only happen through integrating transport. We should ensure that walking, wheeling and cycling is fully connected to bus, tram and train networks. “Local leaders know what’s best for their communities. Further devolution of powers and investment will help them deliver better connections, growing local and national economies so people feel the benefit. “We look forward to working with the new government and the Department for Transport to develop a national transport strategy that works for everyone.” ]

An all-new report has revealed how many people are walking, wheeling and cycling in Orkney, as well as bringing to light the barriers preventing more Orcadians from using active travel. Orkney Travel Matters, published in partnership with Orkney Islands Council and supported by funding from Transport Scotland, is the first assessment of its kind carried out by Sustrans Scotland in an island setting. This is a pilot report and we hope to support partners in carrying out similar assessments in other islands and rural areas. Findings here: https://buff.ly/3xHkyHB 🚶♀️ 👨🦽 🚴♀️
