It's been an exciting few days with people showing their support for Sussex Bay in brilliant ways: from Sussex Bay being mentioned in Parliament amongst MPs (https://lnkd.in/gpGptnpc), to local artist Daniel Locke and Christopher Sandom exhibiting through comic storytelling how place, nature and people connect, and Brighton & Hove City Council Tidy Up Team planning a Big Pride Brighton Beach Clean (biodegradable glitter and rainbow outfits optional) on 4 August (tickets need to be booked in advance, with a free ticket as a thank you for the Fabuloso event on Sunday 4th August: https://lnkd.in/gi3wjjkX). Official site for Sussex Bay. 100 miles of coastline, 1 million residents. Chichester to Kent & everything in between.
About us
Welcome to the official site for the Sussex Bay. A vision for 100 miles of coastline where our seascape, people and rivers flourish. A healthy blue ecosystem in which nature, people and local economy can thrive: the blue mirror to the South Downs. Look out for Paul Brewer & Dean Spears. We're reflecting after our launch, 13 June 24. We'll post updates here. Sussex Bay is a movement initiated by Adur & Worthing Councils, powered by civic organisations, local businesses, communities and people. We’re on a mission to generate a £50 million fund for nature recovery by 2050 to accelerate local seascape recovery along 100 miles of Sussex coastline. Sussex Bay originated from conversations and ideas with the hundreds of community groups, scientists, residents and others working in the sea and land throughout Sussex Bay. Workshops with key stakeholders were undertaken during 2021, culminating in a webinar attended by over a 100 people from along the Sussex coast. The vision for Sussex Bay is widely understood and supported, and work has continued at strategic and project levels during 2022 and 2023. In 2023, following a competitive bid, Sussex Bay received funding from Esmee Fairbairn Foundation and appointed a Head of Blue Natural Capital to lead the design and implementation of the UK’s first Blue Natural Capital Lab alongside running operations and associated programmes. In 2024, following support from Rewilding Britain, we appointed our first Science Lead Officer, to produce, with partners, a Sussex Seascape Framework. Together, we can build a thriving future for the Sussex seascape. By collaborating boldly across the region, we can accelerate the great nature recovery work already in place and make new strides in research and funding. Whilst our work is based on the south coast of England, our approach in terms of policy and projects is of interest nationally. We are keen to collaborate. ALL welcome.

It was brilliant sharing our #SussexBay story and ideas with business colleagues in Adur & Worthing early this morning, especially as our project of hope has its roots in this wonderful part of the world. All Welcome. #SussexBay #Collaboration #Kindness #Marine #Hope Paul Brewer Catherine Howe Noel Hatch Adur & Worthing Councils

Great to spend brief time today in the north of Sussex Bay in Midhurst with Chichester District Council colleagues, UKHarvest, Chichester Harbour Conservancy, Manhood Peninsula Partnership, Voluntary Action Arun & Chichester (VAAC), as we shared ideas with local residents on potential climate change projects in the area. A lovely, friendly way to consult without hierarchy and with warmth. Very kind folks - I was running late (Sussex Bay is a big and beautiful area), and by the time I arrived, the team had assembled the Sussex Bay stall and were chatting about Sussex Bay with others - radical collaboration, with kindness - in action. If you're a Chichester District Council resident, community group or business, you can also have your say in the ideas survey online at: https://lnkd.in/etsEAUZ7 🐟 💚 Thank you James Brigden for the invitation #Kindness #SussexBay #AllWelcome #Communities Paul Brewer Sarah Hadwen Rob Alcroft Diana Alcroft Sam Zindel Kate Hershkowitz Sarah Hadwen Jane Cunningham Ruth Anslow Ruth Pineda Noel Hatch

Eight years ago, Dean Spears jumped in the ocean for the first time 🌊 Speaking at this morning’s sustainably themed Pop-up Breakfast at MOSHIMO, he talked about his relationship with the ocean, his career so far, and how it’s all led to Sussex Bay – an ambitious project to accelerate local seascape recover along 100 miles of Sussex coastline. From being a first-generation scholar studying Geography, to almost deciding to become a teacher, and working for government organisations on cycling initiatives (if you’ve ever walked down New Road, you have Dean to thank) – he’s had an interesting and varied career in Brighton and beyond. But, during the pandemic Dean began to feel disconnected from what he was doing. He realised that our oceans need support. There’s no national, or government policy taking care of the oceans. So five years ago, Sussex Bay was born. Working with the crown estate, government groups and activists, they’re collaborating to restore the Sussex coastline, aiming to raise £50million by 2050. At it’s heart, Dean says Sussex Bay is a project of hope. When asked if hope is enough – he says it’s a good start. A big thank you to Dean for speaking this morning, to the team at Moshimo for hosting us, and to the Brighton & Hove Living Wage Campaign for sponsoring ✨

Sussex Bay absolutely loved spending time and sharing ideas as part of the wonderful Shoreham Port Sustainability Week: talking about our mission, plans, ways to get involved, even practicing radical collaboration in action via Gorilla spotting, hehe. We'll upload the recording over the next few weeks. Sussex Bay reposted this
Great things are ahead for marine restoration and blue natural capital in Sussex and beyond! Congrats to Dean Spears, Paul Brewer, and the scores of other people who have worked to get Sussex Bay off the ground.
13 June 2024, was a special day. We launched Sussex Bay alongside 450 wonderful people. We're humbled by the warmth, support and kindness for our mission: to generate a £50million fund by 2050 to enable nature to flourish throughout our ocean, reefs and rivers along 100 miles of Sussex coastline, to co-produce with communities our brand new research-led Seascape Recovery Plan wrapped up in our Blue Natural Capital Lab & network (a place of funding and policy innovation), all founded upon the past few years of radical collaboration. The event was full of hope & emotion. Such an amazing array of organisations & projects representing the fantastic nature recovery work across Sussex Bay. Thank you to all of our speakers, stall holders and volunteers who gave their time and to our sponsors. Thank you Adur & Worthing Councils for hosting Sussex Bay with your kindness and guidance, along with Esmée Fairbairn Foundation and Rewilding Britain for fully funding our work to date. Beautiful venue at Brighton Corn Exchange…and yummy pastries provided from Real Patisserie Ltd and drinks from Bird & Blend Tea Co. B Corp - examples of local employers and sustainability trail-blazers. £250,160 raised so far in the Sussex Bay Crowdfunder (runs until at least October 2024)- https://lnkd.in/e9ETrZTK We'll share more updates, photographs and recordings over the weeks ahead. Thank you everyone, we're over the [Sussex Bay] moon. ALL Welcome.
